IUPUI University Library Honors
National German-American Organization

IUPUI University Library is pleased to present the exhibit, "A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body: The 150th Anniversary of the American Turners National Organization," now on display in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives. The exhibit salutes the American Turners for their 150 years of service to the German-American community and to the cause of physical fitness and physical education.

German immigrants founded the American Turners national organization in 1850. "A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body: The 150th Anniversary of the American Turners National Organization" highlights the Turners' activities over the years. The Turners fought for the political rights of German immigrants, served as the social and cultural center for many German-American communities, and actively promoted physical fitness and physical education. In 1866 the American Turners founded a school for gymnastic teachers that is today the Indiana University School of Physical Education, located on the IUPUI campus. This school is the oldest continuously operated school of physical education in the United States.

"A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body: The 150th Anniversary of the American Turners National Organization" is on display through February, 2001 in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, located on the Lower Level, Room 0133 in the IUPUI University Library. Hours are 8 AM-5 PM Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8 AM-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8 AM-noon on Saturday. For further information, please call (317) 274-0464, or visit http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/special/hdip/home.html.

*UCITA Teleconference at IU Bloomington

Through generous sponsorship of the Information Technology Policy Office of the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, the Main Library will host a teleconference on December 13, 2000 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in E 174 of the IU Main Library. This teleconference will help you learn more about UCITA and what you can do to deal with this legislation in your state! PLEASE EMAIL pbremer@indiana.edu IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND.

UCITA: A Guide to Understanding and Action A Satellite Teleconference

Sponsored by: American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, Association of Research Libraries, Medical Library Association, Special Libraries Association.

The teleconference will feature four panelists:
-James Neal, Dean of University Libraries, Johns Hopkins University
-Rodney Petersen, Director, Policy and Planning, Office of Information Technology at the University of Maryland
-Sarah K. (Sally) Wiant, Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law, Washington and Lee University
-Catherine Wojewodzki, Librarian, Reference Department, University of Delaware Library and former member of the Delaware legislature.

The teleconference will provide a valuable "primer" on UCITA, strategies for dealing with the legislation in your state, and an opportunity to ask the panelists questions. UCITA, the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, is a proposed state law that seeks to create a unified approach to the licensing of software and information. Two states -- Maryland and Virginia -- have passed UCITA, and it will be under consideration in many other states in the near future. UCITA's broad scope and focus on software and information requires that the research, education, and library communities understand what the adoption of UCITA will mean for the mission, operation, and core values of the higher education and library communities.
