*Rare books donated to IUPUI University Library
INDIANAPOLIS - A descendant of German immigrants who established one of the most extensive printing operations in the American colonies has donated valuable 18th century publications to the IUPUI University Library.
Christopher Saur of Germantown, Pennsylvania, ancestor of Wayne K. Sowers, printed the first Bible published in America for European colonists five years after opening the printing shop that launched the family business and would pass from him to his son, and then his grandson. Sowers, a Bloomington resident, recently donated a collection of 11 books printed by the Saur family from 1750-1797 to the IUPUI University Library's Special Collection and Archives.
"The donation by Wayne K. Sowers expands in a significant way the extensive collections of German-American materials in the IUPUI Special Collections and Archives," said Giles Hoyt, IUPUI professor of German and Associate Dean of International Affairs. "Mr. Sowers has provided IUPUI with a unique collection of his ancestor's imprints. The 11 volumes provide a body of primarily religious early American English and German texts useful for research in a number of areas related to American and religious studies."
The books donated to the IUPUI University Library include such diverse titles as "The Archbishop of Chambray's Dissertation on Pure Love," printed in 1750, "The Fatal Consequences of the Unscriptural Doctrine of Predestination and Reprobation," printed in 1753, and "The Ready Reckoner," printed in 1774. According to David Lewis, Dean of the IUPUI University Library, "These volumes are excellent examples of Colonial American publishing and provide our students, faculty, and the public with a wonderful opportunity to study this period of American printing and publishing."
Holman Bible Publishers, part of the present-day Broadman & Holman Publishers that prints Bibles, Christian devotionals, and other religious publications, traces its roots to the company founded by Saur.
The Saur family books will be housed in the IUPUI University Library's Special Collections and Archives. The 11 volumes, most found in only a handful of American libraries, will not circulate, but will be available for viewing and study during the Special Collections and Archives' regular hours.
The IUPUI University Library's Special Collections and Archives encompass Manuscript Collections, University Archives, and Rare Books. These collections have been developed in relation to the teaching and research activities of the University and the community and are available to visiting scholars, the general public, and IUPUI faculty and students. The Manuscript Collections contain significant primary sources for the study of Philanthropy, German-Americana, and individuals and organizations with ties to the University and/or Indianapolis. The University Archives preserves the official records of IUPUI and its various predecessor institutions. Rare Books preserves titles from the 16th century to recent first editions, as well as faculty publications.
The IUPUI University Library, opened in 1993, now serves over 25,000 students, the faculty and staff of IUPUI, as well as the citizens of Central Indiana. With over 650,000 volumes in its main collection and subscriptions to over 4,500 periodicals and journals, the Library also provides access to over 250 public computer stations and a range of electronic resources. For further information about the IUPUI University Library and its Special Collections and Archives, log on at:http://www.ulib.iupui.edu or call (317) 274-8278.

The IUPUI University Library is hosting a photography exhibition entitled, Tibet's March for Independence, through December 21. The artist, Jun Itoi, will be presenting insights from his documentation of the 3-day demonstration march on Thursday, December 13, at 4:00 p.m. in the Lilly Auditorium, Lower Level.
A presentation of slides representative of over 2,500 black and white photos will chronicle the 500-mile walk from San Francisco to Los Angeles in April 2000, which was sponsored by the International Tibet Independence Movement. The movement works to help Tibet regain its independence from the People's Republic of China, which has occupied Tibet since 1950. Itoi will also speak about the digital journal generated daily during the walk.
A panel discussion about the current issues of Tibet will follow Itoi's presentation. Joining the artist for the panel discussion will be Benjamin Cox (director, International Tibet Independence Movement) and Namgyal Shallung (Tibetan political refugee).
Jun Itoi completed an MFA in Photography at the University of North Texas this year, and a BFA from the Herron School of Art, IUPUI, in 1997. Currently, Itoi is a visiting assistant professor of photography for the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington.
