The University Library (UL) of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has announced the presentation of a collaborative display of miniature books from the collections of the Miniature Book Society, Inc., the Lilly Library of Indiana University, Bloomington and the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the IUPUI University Library. The exhibit, "Miniature Books of the World," is currently open to the public through January 28, 2000 in the UL Level One Lobby.
The Miniature Book Society, Inc. is an international non-profit organization founded in Ohio in 1983, and is focused on an art of book printing and collecting that was formally established during the Middle Ages. As a means of fulfilling it purpose to "encourage the love of miniature books," the Society has established a national traveling exhibit that includes over 100 books. The current traveling collection features Old King Cole, the smallest book in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Also featured in the national touring exhibition is Where and What and Whom, a 1997 Distinguished Book Award Winner by Paul Brown, Associate Dean of the Herron School of Art at IUPUI. The 24-page book is 3" X 2 <" and is published by Brown Trout Press, Bloomington, Indiana.
The Ruth Adomeit Collection of Miniature Books, comprised of 16,000 items, was received in the form of a bequest to the Lilly Library of Indiana University, Bloomington in 1996. The full collection includes several materials dating back to 2000 B.C., with a majority representing printings from the early 1600's on the European continent to the American Far West through 1870. On display at the University Library will be a portion of the collection including: The History and Description of the Famous Cathedral of St. Paul's London, 1741; Portraits of the Sovereigns of England, with drawings by Alfred Mills, 1817; A Weed Among the Flowers, by Graham Greene, 1990.
A sampling of miniature books that are housed in the UL Ruth Lilly Special Collections & Archives, will supplement the Level One display, and will include: Maximiliano et Elisabeth, published in 1629; The Blind Beggar, from the 1800's; English-French Dictionary, a 20th century publication.

*IUPUI University Library Website Gets New Look For 2000
The next millenium brings with it a new look for the homepage of the IUPUI University Library (UL). The gateway interface of the Library Information System (LIS) is currently undergoing a "face-lift," and the updated web site will offer enhanced usability and accessibility. A significant feature of the new design will be a faster load time, which will be of benefit to patrons within the facility and those accessing it remotely. Various UL staff joined the Digital Libraries Team in development of the redesign, beginning in Spring 1999. The goal is to make the new homepage pleasing to the eye, as well as easier to navigate.
A link to the new LIS is currently on all UL computer workstations. This will enable students, faculty, and staff to see the changes that will be effective in January 2000. Comments and suggestions about the redesigned LIS are welcome, and links to either a brief survey or an email for feedback are available on the new homepage.
The temporary URL for the new LIS for University Library is http://wwwnt.ulib.iupui.edu. The new homepage, located at http://www.ulib.iupui.edu, will officially debut on January 10, 2000.

*Master Plan & Renovation Meetings at IU Bloomington
There will be two library staff meetings on December 15 for a presentation and discussion of the Master Plan and the phasing of the renovation. Both meetings will present the same information, so you may attend either one. The first is from 10:30-11:30am and the second is from 1:00-2:00pm. Both will take place in Media Showing Room E174.
*SIRSI Teleconference Locations
On Wednesday December 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. a video teleconference will be held in the following locations to discuss Sirsi Circulation mapping..

This session is designed to acquaint key people at each Circulation point with some of the key elements, which will affect circulation policies in the Unicorn circulation system.
In the weeks following this teleconference, Randy and Steven will visit each library to help them make decisions on how to map NOTIS location codes to various Sirsi data elements. We will have a very short timeline to complete this work. It will be important that each library be prepared to set an appointment to meet, have a basic understanding of the process, and know which players are key for these discussions.
If you have questions/comments/concerns please feel free to contact Steven Schmidt (schmidt@iupui.edu or 317 2740470) or Randy Lent (lent@indiana.edu or 812 855-8249) after December 13, 1999.
