STAFF NEWS

*Staff Updates, IUB

Effective December 17 Lori Badger accepted the position of Acquisitions Assistant in the Acquisitions Division of Technical Services at IU-Bloomington. Prior to accepting this position, Lori worked in the Lilly Library and for the Subject and Area Librarians at IU. She has a Bachelor of Music Education.

*Acting Head of Preservation, IUB

Jake Nadal has been appointed Visiting Assistant Librarian and Acting Head of Preservation, effective January 1, 2002--extending his current appointment for another six months. Jake will receive his MLS from SLIS on December 15, 2001. His coursework includes Library Preservation, the History of the Book, Collection Development, and Metadata. He previously completed a BA with Honors in Music in 1998 from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.

Jake began to work in the Preservation Department in September 1999, reformatting brittle books, and became the Brittle Books Coordinator a year later. In this capacity he supervised the Library's microfilming, digital reformatting, and mass deacidification projects. He was appointed Acting Head of Preservation in August of 2001. With two years and a half of experience in the Preservation Department, Jake is familiar with their current projects as well as emerging trends in the field. He worked previously in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library System.

I would like to thank Jake for his willingness to continue this responsibility during an especially critical period of the Preservation Department's growth and development, particularly as they prepare to move to the ALF. At the same time, I appreciate the leadership of Mechael Charbonneau and other members of the Search & Screen Committee for their work in screening candidates. In six months we'll revisit the issue of continuing the national search for a new Head of Preservation.

*New Interim Assignments

Due to Lou Malcomb's much-deserved sabbatical leave and resignation as RCSD Coordinator on December lst, the following interim arrangements are being put into place immediately until a new Assistant Director of Collection Development/Head of SALC is hired at which time the entire Main Library organization structure will be reviewed.

Pat Steele will serve as the Coordinator for Main Library public services with responsibility for all public service units in both Academic Information Services and Research Collections & Services. This will bring together all public service units under one coordinator including Undergraduate Library Services, Reference, and Government Publications with the heads of these units reporting directly to Pat. This is an enhancement of the current arrangement whereby these units meet together, under Pat's leadership, on a regular basis.

The Main Library Research & Collection Services will be represented at LMT by Ann Bristow, also on an interim basis.

I would like to thank Pat and Ann for their willingness to serve in these enhanced capacities.
