David Lasocki, Head of Reference Services in the Music Library, IUB, is in Vienna from April 27th to May 7th, lecturing at the Hochschule fu"r Musik and darstellende Kunst and as the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the European Recorder Teachers Association (Austrian branch).
Sue London, Head of Reference at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, has been selected by the School of Medicine Faculty Awards Committee for a 1998 Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. The $1,500.00 award was inaugurated in 1992 to recognize superior teaching by School of Medicine faculty and to highlight the importance of teaching within the School. Since 1995, Ms. London is responsible for teaching students, graduate students, and residents of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health how to effectively search the biomedical literature using MEDLINE and other library resources. She has recently been asked to each evidence-based medicine database searching to senior medical students and has been standing in for the instructor of L559 in the School of Library and Information Science.
Cinda May presented a paper titled "The Business of a Scholar: Eighteenth Century Primary Sources in the Lilly Library" at the annual meeting of the Johnson Society of the Central Region convened at Indiana University, Bloomington, April 24-25, 1998.
Effective May 11, Spencer Anspach accepted the Technology Training and Education Specialist position in Libraries Information Technology. Spencer has held the Database Coordinator position in the Swain Hall Library since April of 1995.
Effective May 1, Jodi Graham resigned from her position as Instructional Software/Variations Project Programmer with the Cook Music Library.
Effective April 27, Jill Robertson resigned from her position as Department Secretary in Library Administration.
Effective April 27, Carlton Stokes has accepted the position of Serials Control Coordinator in the Serials Department. Carlton has worked as Special Materials Coordinator in the Library since 1996.
Effective April 27, Barry Wray accepted the Computer Support Technician position in Libraries Information Technology at IUPUI. Barry has been a Production Control Coordinator-Operations Technician in the Network Operations Center at IUPUI since December of 1996. He has a Technical Certificate in AutoCad Design from Ivy Tech in Indianapolis and is currently enrolled in the Integrated Technologies Certification Program.
CORRECTION
In last week's IUL News article about Ann Bristow, it was incorrectly stated that the Retirement and Recognition Reception will be held on May 21. It will be held on May 20.
2. Reception For New Librarians And Staff
The Libraries' Faculty/Staff Development Committee is planning its semi-annual orientation program for staff appointed since the last orientation. The Committee will again have an informal reception for these employees. Please join us on Tuesday, May 5, between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., in the Third Floor Lounge (Main Library) for refreshments and take this opportunity to meet your newest colleagues. 3. IUPUI University Libraries Advisory Committee Announced
The University Libraries of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has established an Advisory Committee to assist in its building of strong and viable development and community relations programs. The Committee consists of business, civic and professional leadership who represent alumni and friends of IUPUI. This community leadership will serve in an advisory capacity as the IUPUI University Libraries seek to expand its base of support, strengthen service to members of the academic and civic communities, meet the priorities of the University, and address the challenges of providing library services into the twenty-first century. When announcing the establishment of the Advisory Committee, Philip Tompkins, IUPUI University Librarian, Executive Director of Libraries, stated, *The community made it possible for the University to build a leading edge facility; we respond by building greater links between the world of electronic resources and the information needs of the people of Central Indiana.*
This first IUPUI University Library Advisory Committee has been joined by Scott L. Bradley, Vice President and General Manager of Xerox Corporation; Donna Coppinger, Vice President of Marketing for Duke Realty Investments; Civic Volunteers, Dickie Hardee, Fran Julian and Isabel McKinney; William E. Keep your calendars open to join us for the Annual Library Picnic. It will be held on JUNE 23 (Tuesday) from 11:30-2:30 at Bryan Park. Bring your chairs, blankets, and your favorite games. We will provide the drinks and some of the food. If you are interested, there will be an opportunity to bring either a side dish or dessert. If enough people sign up there will also be swimming in the pool nearby. Look for more information and an RSVP form to arrive soon!
