8. IUB LIBRARIES REFERENCE SERVICE EXTENDS TO THE ELECTRONIC ARENA
As the kinds of information resources available in the IUB Libraries continue to change and move toward electronic platforms, so have its information services. Since 1987, IU's Main Library Reference Department has offered IUB students, faculty and staff the option of requesting and receiving reference assistance online, via e-mail at LIBREF@INDIANA.EDU. In 1995, the service also became accessible through the Library's Research Collections and Services Department "A sk a Librarian" Web page http://www.indiana.edu/~libweb/question.html.
The reference department promotes the service as "one of the best ways for you to send your reference questions directly to us" and encourages IU faculty, staff and students to use the service to ask any kind of question they would ask in person at the re ference desk. The reference librarians check for messages every few hours and try to answer questions as quickly as possible, but within 24 hours. Ann Bristow, head of the reference department, says the service has huge benefits to patrons. Some people, she notes, are much more comfortable asking questions electronically than in-person. "When you're at the desk you often hear: I know this is a silly question...' We don't get that preface as often to questions submitted over e-mail."
Conducting reference service electronically also enables librarians to concentrate on specific questions when they are not distracted by ringing phones or a line of people waiting for assistance. It's also easier for staff members to direct questions sent by e-mail to the librarian with the most knowledge of the question's subject matter, and to continue investigating questions for which no immediate answer is available.
As use of the World Wide Web continues to grow and become the focal point for IU's information resources, Bristow would like to see the "Ask a Librarian" option added to other Web pages and integrated with other library services. The option currently appe ars at the bottom of the IUB Library's Home and companion Web pages along with links to IUCAT, the IUB Libraries Home page and the IUB Home page. She points out that the reference desk is physically located near both print and electronic resources in IU's research collections and services department to make assistance readily accessible. "I'd like to replicate that on the Web," she says, "so that you'll easily see a place where you can ask for help -- and know that a human being will respond."
Bristow disputes the notion that the need for librarians and library services will decrease as information resources become more automated and accessible through electronic means. "If anything," she says, "information resources are becoming more complex a nd the need for assistance is greater....It just has to be the right kind of assistance."
For further information about the IUB Library's electronic reference service, see the "Ask A Librarian" Web page at http://www.indiana.edu/~libweb/question.html, or contact Ann Bristow at 855-8028; e-mail: bristow@indiana.edu.
