1. THANKS!!!

Thanks to the Special Events Committee for another successful event--the last of the year. Last week's picnic was one of the most successful picnics we've had. The members of this year's Special Events Committee were Nancy Boerner, Jo Burgess, Ria Collee, Mark Feddersen, Cameron McGuire, Jeanne Myers, Harold Shaffer, Lynn Smith, Christia Thomason, and Jane Van Auken. Betty Andis, Library Personnel, and Midge Harris, Library Administration, provided assistance to the committee throughout the year.

AND THANKS AGAIN!!

I would like to send out special thanks to everyone who helped with optional tours for freshman advising & registration in June and July:

Randy Lent Cameron McGuire Mary Popp
Nancy Schmidt Patricia Steele Lou Malcomb
Margaret Parks Matthew Paris Cinda May
Harold Shaffer
The tours went smoothly, and were well received by the parents of our incoming freshman for 1996/97. This couldn't have been accomplished without you!

3. NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE PRIZE AWARDED

Tom Emmett, M.D., M.L.S. at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library won the National Library of Medicine's Gold Standard Search prize in the NLM Technical Bulletin. The feature offers searchers a chance to match wits with NLM staff on search strategy formulation. The November- December 1995 question was

Your patron wants articles on the effects of weightlessness on bone density. She has already searched MEDLINE and wants only non-MEDLINE derived citations on the subject.

The Technical Bulletin reports that "Dr. Emmett ran his search in SPACELINE using the ELHILL command language. Dr. Emmett's selection of MeSH headings revealed an in-depth knowledge of the subject resulting in exceptional retrieval in terms of both quantity and quality...Dr. Emmett used both OSTEOCLASTS and OSTEOBLASTS in his search...These were both excellent headings to include in the strategy and they resulted in the retrieval of one additional and highly relevant citation compared to the Gold Standard Search."

The May-June 1996 issue of NLM Technical Bulletin contains both the NLM Gold Standard Search and Tom's search.
