1. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

On October 16, 1996, May Jafari, University Libraries, presented a paper entitled: "Utilizing Technology for Information Retrieval: How the Web Can Enhance Library Services" at the 8th Annual Hypermedia 96 Conference held at IUPUI University Place Conference Center.

Effective October 21, Katherine Frisch accepted the Searching/Gifts Coordinator position in MPS. Before coming to Bloomington, Katherine was a paraprofessional copy cataloger at Northwestern University Library.

2. GRANTS WRITING

Charles Hixson began a half time grants writing assignment in the Libraries Development Office. Charles will help write and coordinate a variety of grants including the Ameritech/Library of Congress Digital Library initiative.

Charles is located in E 164 in the Main Library. He can be reached on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 pm or by appointment at 5-7747 for anyone interested in grants information.

3. SUMMARY OF GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Materials/Equipment Acquisition (computers, books, tapes, etc.) Any US research or educational institution(above high school level) is eligible.

DEADLINE: November 1

This program goals are: research and understanding of Japan in the US through donation of books and other materials related to Japan, and funding for resource acquisition; to promote national and regional resource sharing and library cooperation. Categories in this program include two categories for materials in English and tow for materials in Japanese.

"Documents to the People" Award

DEADLINE: Dec. 1 Applications and nominations are invited; appropriate forms may be obtained from the Government Documents Round Table Staff Liaison at ALA.

This award (up to $2,000) donated by Congressional Information Service, is given annually to an individual, library, organization, or noncommercial group that has effectively encouraged use of government documents in support of library services.
