1. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

At the 1996 INDIGO Fall Conference, Robert A. Hinton, IUPUI University Library was elected Assistant Chair/Chair Elect of INDIGO (Indiana Networking for Documents and Information of Government Organizations. Bob will serve as Assistant Chair/Chair-Elect until November 1997 and then Chair from November 1997 to November 1998.

3. BLF CONTINUING EDUCATION RESEARCH FORUM

The BLF Continuing Education Committee invites you to our next Research Forum on Thursday, Nov. 7, noon-1:15 in the Main Library Ground Floor Conference Room. Jean Poland is our featured speaker, and her presentation, "Librarians in Southeast Asia: One Fellow's Travels" will include a slide show on her recent research travels to Burma and Thailand. Please bring your lunch and join us for an informative and entertaining session.

Wireless technology is being used to communicate and transfer data between users without phone lines or network connections. Institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, the George Washington University, and the State Library of Iowa recently installed wireless LANs. Find out how this technology can benefit information professionals and their users.

         Hear Michael Conway and George Bishop of Ovid Elsie Area
         Schools, Elsie, Michigan, give an overview of this new
         technology and discuss how they've used some of its applications.

1 pm     Concurrent sessions
         Session A:  "A vendor's perspective: what's coming?"
         A vendor representative addresses future developments.
         
         Session B:  "What's happening in Indiana?"  John Castleman,
         Director, Bluffton-Wells County Library, and Ross Riker,
         Director, Kendallville Public Library, discuss their 
         libraries' use of wireless technology.

5. FALL CONFERENCE OF INDIANA TEACHERS OF WRITING REPORT

A Federal Case: Using Government Documents to Teach Research Writing presented at "Writing from the Center" the Sixteenth Annual Fall Conference of the Indiana Teachers of Writing, September 26-28, 1996 at the Adams Mark Hotel, Indianapolis, Indiana by Robert A. Hinton, Documents/Reference Librarian, IUPUI University Library and Dr. Nadene A. Keene, Department of Humanities, Indiana University Kokomo.

Mr. Hinton gave overviews of government documents, the Federal Depository Library Program sources that index and abstract government documents, and electronic government document resources. Dr. Keene presented her syllabus for the W132 writing course and discussed the writing assignments required for the course. Over 500 teachers of writing from kindergarten through college from throughout Indiana and the Midwest attended this conference.

6. ILF DISTRICT IV AT GREENWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY IN OCTOBER

The Indiana Library Federation District IV held its annual meeting at the Greenwood Public Library on October 22. The theme of the meeting was "Window on the World: Unique Patrons." One hundred and twenty-five librarians from Central Indiana registered for the meeting.

The IU Libraries were well represented on this very successful program. Rosanne Cordell, I.U. South Bend, spoke about "The Intellectual Freedom Climate in Indiana." Robin Crumrin and Sharon Hay, IUPUI University Library conducted a session entitled, "There's No Place Like Homepages." Sue London, IU School of Medicine Library, spoke about "Medical Reference." Bill Orme, IUPUI University Library discussed the future of CD-ROM in American libraries, "Discs, Discs Everywhere...But Which Ones Do I Choose." Vania Goodwin, IUPUI University Library was one of the members of the Planning Committee.

7. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

The following are grant opportunities from the American Library Association:

FRANCES HENNE YALSA/VOYA Research grant.
Seed money for small-scale projects to encourage research related to library
service to young adults. Applicants must be members of YALSA; projects 
can be undertaken by individual, group, or institution.

Gale Research Company Financial Development Award
Award presented to library organization exhibiting meritorious 
achievement in carrying out a library financial development project to 
secure new funding resources for a public or academic library entity.
Criteria may include: evidence of the need for for and appropriateness of 
financial goal; use of innovative, creative, and well-organized 
development methods; success in meeting or exceeding goal within a 
reasonable expenditure of fund-raising monies; involvement of library 
supporters such as trustees and library friends groups.
