Thanks to the Special Events Committee, especially co-chairs Lynn Smith and Judie Foster, for a wonderful Holiday Party. The decorations, music, and food were great. And of course Santa and the books given to the children helped make the event extra special. Thanks also to everyone who attended and participated in the holiday spirit.

ENVIRONMENT: Indiana University South Bend is the third largest of the eight campuses that comprise the Indiana University system. IUSB offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to a varied student population of 7,500. A new library facility opened in 1989 and contains approximately 300,000 volumes. It is part of the IU Libraries and has a NOTIS automated catalog. The technical services department has three FTE staff positions and has the responsibility to meet the needs of our local campus and to share in maintaining the standards and quality of the Indiana University system. JOB DESCRIPTION: Primary areas of responsibility: cataloging and serials control. Manages and supervises daily operations of the NOTIS system and the serials processing unit. Works directly with the Indiana University Bloomington Monographic Processing and Serials departments to maintain the quality of the database and to input, correct, or delete records as needed. Trains and evaluates staff. Shares in management of entire technical services unit and develops and interprets policies, practices and standards for the unit.

QUALIFICATION: Required: ALA-MLS. Energetic, motivated, and flexible professional. Ability to work well as team member and independently. One to two years previous experience in technical services. Knowledge of AACR2 and principles of classification and subject analysis. Demonstrated strength in oral and written communication. Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure track position. Preferred: Working knowledge of LCSH, LC classification, OCLC and NOTIS or Horizon. Previous supervisory experience. Previous serials experience, especially using MicroLinx.

FRINGE BENEFITS: 22 working days vacation; liberal sick leave; Blue

SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience (minimum $27,000)

Position(s) available: July 1, 1997

Position Description: The successful candidate(s) will serve on two teams in a team-based environment depending upon qualifications and skill sets. The teams include Reference and Research, Instruction, Cataloging, and Interface. The Reference and Research Team is responsible for developing and providing reference desk and research consultation services. The Instruction Team is responsible for working with faculty to integrate information literacy and library resources in the curriculum. The Cataloging Team is responsible for developing and maintaining bibliographic control of the library's collections. The Interface Team is responsible for developing and maintaining the library's Web Interface. All librarians have liaison relationships with one or more schools or departments .

Environment: The University Library at IUPUI is a leader in the application of technology to library service (http://www-lib.iupui.edu) and developing instructional teams that bring together faculty, librarians, computer professionals, and students to develop and deliver courses. The University Library is a team-based organization with each librarian serving on two library teams.

Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited M.L.S. Must have an ability to work in a complex team-based environment and with a diverse user group; strong verbal and written skills; and knowledge of library technology. A second advanced degree, relevant academic library experience, and teaching experience is preferred.

Salary: Minimum - $29,200 - Assistant Librarian floor.

4. WILLIAM EVANS JENKINS LIBRARIAN AWARD

The Jenkins Award Committee is asking for nominations for the 1997 Jenkins Award for outstanding librarianship. Current and former Bloomington librarians are eligible to receive this award. The nomination form follows this message.

Please take the time to consider the professional contributions and achievements of your colleagues and to make nominations. The award consists of a certificate and $500. If more than one individual is given the award, the $500 will be shared equally by the recipients. The winner will be announced during National Library Week in April, and the award will be presented at the Retirement and Recognition Reception in May. The recipient's name will be added to the plaque in the Main Library lobby.

Nominations should be submitted by February 1, 1997, to Marilyn Shaver, Personnel Officer. Librarians nominated in the previous year will remain nominees for the current year. The chair of the Jenkins Award Committee will contact nominators for updated information. Supporting documents should be submitted by March 1. Complete guidelines are included in the IUB Library Faculty Handbook. Marilyn Shaver will send a copy of the guidelines on request.

NATIONAL HOME LIBRARY FOUNDATION GRANTS

Grants awarded to assist in the distribution of books, pamphlets, and documents to libraries and community groups to assist with the support, promotion, and development of programs with the goal of combatting illiteracy and/or encouraging an interest in reading and the the literary arts among all ages; to encourage new techniques in the operation of libraries; to facilitate the collection and distribution of printed and audiovisual materials; and to encourage the development of programs related to literary or cultural topics utilizing various means of communication. Nonprofit US organizations are eligible.
