1. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Dawn Hornbeck, a former employee at Indiana University Libraries for 16 years, died Saturday, February 1, in the Bloomington Hospital. She had lived with diabetes since childhood.

Ms. Hornbeck began her I.U. library work in 1977 under the supervision of Vivian Whaley in the "file area" of the Circulation Department. In December, 1985, she transferred to the Journalism Library as the Branch Manager. She resigned her position in 1993 and returned to Hartwick, New York, her home town.

In 1990 she received the Library Staff Employee Award, given by the I.U. Library Support Staff Organization.

Ms. Hornbeck is one of the finest persons with whom I have worked. She had a deep commitment to library service, and she was a skillful communicator with disgruntled patrons and her student employees.

A memorial service in Bloomington will be announced at a later time.

Her partner, Daryl Shadrick, and her son, Alden Hornbeck Shadrick, reside at 700 N. Washington St., Bloomington, Indiana 47401.

--Frances Wilhoit, Head, Journalism Library

David Lasocki (Music Library, IUB) gave a lecture entitled "Authentic Early Music?" to the Friends of the Library at Tulane University, New Orleans, on February 2nd.

David Fenske, Michael Fling, David Lasocki, Constance Mayer, Ralph Papakhian, and Sue Stancu (Music Library, IUB) all attended the Music Library Association annual meeting in New Orleans, January 29th-February 1st.

Effective January 31, Deanna Nichols accepted the Library Services Associate I (Senior Manuscript Assistant) position in the Lilly Library. Prior to coming to IU, Deanna was Associate Librarian at the Los Angeles Times. She received her MLS from the University of Arizona.

8. THE SOURCE NEWSLETTER SEEKING ARTICLE IDEAS

Dear faculty, staff, and students:

We are seeking your ideas for articles you'd like to see in the Spring issue of the IUB Libraries' newsletter, The SOURCE, which will be published in late March.

Our audience is the IU Bloomington faculty, librarians in the fifteen branch libraries and the Main Library, as well as donors who have made gifts to the libraries.

The purpose of our newsletter is to publicize upcoming events and important gifts, spotlight interesting people and departments, report on great things happening in the development of collections and technology, and to provide a forum for readers to add things of timely and special interest.

Please send us a brief description of your ideas, and we will choose the story which best fits in scope and content.

Anything related to the IU Bloomington Libraries will be considered, including: history, policies, conservation and preservation, special collections, issues related to the Internet and new technology, literacy, or personal anecdotes.

For more information please contact Margaret Parks at e-mail: maparks, or phone 855-3403.
