SLIS has selected two of its stalwart adjunct faculty, Lou Malcomb and Joel Silver, to receive teaching excellence awards. Congratulations to both on this well-deserved recognition! Excerpts from the nomination statements follow:
"Lou Malcomb (IU Libraries' Government Publications Department) is a genuinely engaging classroom teacher whose love for, and knowledge of, her subject transmit themselves powerfully to students. For years, she has attracted outstanding evaluations from SLIS students, and for years she has been ready and willing to step into the breach at the drop of a hat. In addition, Lou has been actively involved in providing SLIS students with practical career guidance and planning. Without Lou Malcomb's contributions, SLIS would be a poorer place."
"Joel Silver (Lilly Library) is the doyen of rare books librarianship, and his courses attract students whose evaluations, year on year, testify to his superb teaching skills and extraordinary subject knowledge. SLIS has benefited enormously from the talented contributions of Joel Silver -- he has taken a leadership position in developing a specialization in rare books and manuscripts librarianship within the MLS program -- and this teaching award is absolutely deserved."
In addition to the IU Librarians recognized, SLIS awards for excellence in teaching have been made to Danny Callison, Andy Dillon, and Howard Rosenbaum of the full time SLIS-Bloomington faculty and to Richard Kuster, SLIS faculty member at IUPUI.
Effective March 21 Dorothy Chapman resigned her position in Government Publications.

3. GUILD OF BOOKWORKERS MIDWEST CHAPTER 1996 EXHIBITION AT FINE ARTS LIBRARY, MARCH 13 - APRIL 12
The Fine Arts Library is now hosting the Guild of Bookworkers Midwest Chapter 1997 Exhibition, entitled "Bindings of THE POETICAL VAGARIES OF THE KNIGHT OF THE FOLDING-STICK, OF PASTE CASTLE." Six guild members contributed their bindings of this collection of poems written by a group of bookbinders under the name "John Bradford," first published in 1815. Also on display, as a complement to this traveling exhibition, are books on bookbinding from the Fine Arts Library collection and publications of the Guild of Bookworkers.
Thanks to Jo Burgess and Jim Canary who brought this exhibition to Bloomington and participated in its installation.
Visit the exhibition in the lobby of the Fine Arts Library from now until April 12. The lobby is open Monday through Thursday 8am to 9:30pm, Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sunday noon to 5pm. Access the Fine Arts Library through the Fine Arts Building or the IU Art Museum.
