1. THANKS!!

A great big thanks to Elaine Hehner, Betty Van Winkle, David Smith, and Jo Burgess for selecting the bookplate books for the Student Recognition Reception this year. We know this takes a LOT of hard work and they're efforts are truly appreciated.

2. CONGRATULATIONS!!

I am pleased to announce a new arrival in the Tom Malefatto and Bonnie Williams (both members of the University Archives staff) family. On March 31 at 11:07 pm, Bonnie gave birth to a 5 lb., 12 oz. baby girl. They have named her Anna Amrita Malefatto. Mother and child are doing fine. Cards and other communications can be sent to Bonnie and Tom at 4313 E. Deckard Dr., Bloomington, IN 47408.

3. LILLY LIBRARY RECEPTION

You are cordially invited to the opening reception for the Lilly Library's new exhibition "Women Writing Poetry / U.S. / 20th Century" on Friday, April 4, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

4. STUDENT RECOGNITION DAY APRIL 8TH

"The Special Events Committee wishes to remind all staff to come to the STUDENT RECOGNITION DAY scheduled from 3:30-4:30 on Tuesday April 8th in the Staff Lounge. Please encourage your students to come and enjoy the festivities. There will be door prizes, refreshments and lots of good conversation. Thanks".

5. ART EXHIBIT AREA IN UGLS

All staff are invited to visit the Undergraduate Library and take a look at the new art exhibit area on the north wall opposite the Reference Desk. The current, inaugural exhibit features works by Senior Studio Art major, Rob Funderburke, whose cartoons are often see in the Indiana Daily Student.

The art exhibit space was developed by UGL Reference Coordinator Mary Strow, in conjunction with Co-President of the Fine Arts Student Association, Ernie Hahn. Exhibits will change monthly. The next student artist, Chris Bennett, is scheduled for April 15th, followed by March O'Neill and Anita Debneth, all members of FASA.

This cooperative "Art in the UGL" project has been enthusiastically supported by School of Fine Arts Chair, Jeff Wolin, as well as members of the UGL staff, current UGL Head Carolyn Walters, and previous Head, Lou Malcomb.

Please stop by to see the ongoing exhibits any time!

7. FROM THE ERGONOMICS TEAM

Dr. Mark Ciancone, of the IU Health Center, will be presenting an ergonomics program covering the topics of: upper back strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and more!

The date, time and location of the program is as follows: April 22 from 2-3 p.m. in the Ground Floor Conference Room of the Main Library.

Seating is limited to 40 people. Registration can be done by contacting Marilyn Shaver.

   IUPUI Library home page and her use of a simple usability test which 
   can be replicated easily by other libraries at little or no charge

 * Wade Wingler, Crossroads Rehabilitation, will discuss the ADA aspects of 
   designing a web site and software which can "read" web pages for the 
   visually impaired.

9. MERGER UPDATE - MEDICAL SCIENCES LIBRARY AND BIOLOGY LIBRARY

Planning and preparations for merging the Medical Sciences Library and the Biology Library are going well; the merger will take place in December 1997.

The combined library will bear a new name, Life Sciences Library. Thanks again to Steven Sowell and Doug Freeman who years ago did a masterful job of writing an excellent summary of the issues involved with the merger--we're still making use of the document you produced!

10. INULA NOTES

I am pleased to announce that the newest issue of InULA NOTES is available on the InULA Home Page - www.indiana.edu/~inula. The theme of the issue is "Continuing Education and Staff Development: Helping Individuals Adapt to Change," and contains articles by Ruth Davidson, Chair of the BLFC Continuing Education Committee; Marilyn Shaver, Library Personnel Officer; Mary Beth Minick and Mary Stanley, Management Team, IUPUI Library; and Judith Dye and Mahnaz Moshfegh, Co-Chairs of the IULFC Library Research Committee. This issue of InULA NOTES was edited by Mary Popp and Taemin Park. I encourage anyone who has comments or questions regarding the ideas expressed in this issue to share them with other library faculty and staff by e-mailing the comments to inula@www.indiana.edu.

Fall 1997 International Enhancement Grants

Grants of up to $2,000 are available on a competitive basis for students to pursue relevant academic training programs in order to add or intensify an international component of their IU degrees. Grants are not intended to support research activities. Grants may not support participation in a formal IU overseas study program. Applicants must have an objective that can be completed during the fall semester. Proposals including international travel are encouraged. Applicants may be from any discipline, department, or campus and must have completed at least nine hours of graduate course work at IU at the time of application.
