3. JENKINS AWARD RECIPIENT

Frances G. Wilhoit has been chosen as the 1997 recipient of the William Evans Jenkins award which recognizes outstanding contributions to the Indiana University Libraries and the library profession. Her long and distinguished career began at Indiana University as the Head of the Journalism Library in 1975 where she also served as curator of the Ernie Pyle papers and memorabilia, now housed in the Lilly Library. In addition to the Journalism Library, Frances served as acting collection development officer and acting personnel librarian during the early 1980s. As Head of the Journalism Library, Frances' generous service to students and faculty is widely known. She has been described as "a librarian's librarian who not only knows her own field and its' contours but who is second to none as a specialist in her subject matter. Frances maintains what has to be one of the best university libraries for communication in the U.S. Her Library contains a selection of books and journals which demonstrates a real knowledge of communications rather than just the most popular resources..." During her career Frances has published in such refereed journals as Journalism Quarterly, Journalism Monographs, and Journalism Educator, as well as served as editor of Journalism Abstracts. She has updated, with Eleanor Blum, the standard reference guide in her discipline, Mass Media Bibliography: An Annotated Selected List of Books and Journals for Research and Reference (University of Illinois Press, 1990), and, by invitation, contributed chapters to several major works in the mass communications field. She has also delivered research presentations to such groups as the American Historical Association, Association for Education in Journalism, and the International Communication Association of the Council of Communication Libraries Division, to name but a few. In August 1996, Frances received the Eleanor Blum Distinguished Service to Research Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at their annual convention. Her consulting activities have included advising the prestigious Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida and the Gannett Center for Media Studies, of Columbia University, among other academic programs in journalism throughout the country.

One colleague from the Freedom Forum has perhaps best characterized Frances Wilhoit and her contributions to the library profession when he writes that she "is a person of high intelligence, brilliant organizational skills, rigorous devotion to scholarship and service to one and all. She demonstrates that even in the otherwise cold on-line world, a warm and responsive person brings human values and enjoyable learning."

The William Evans Jenkins Award will be presented to Frances Wilhoit at the annual Retirement and Recognition Reception on May 22, 1997, in Bloomington.

4. TIPS FOR SEARCHING STN EFFECTIVELY AND ECONOMICALLY

Michelle Cervenka, our account representative for Chemical Abstracts/STN, will present a brown-bag lunch training session on Wednesday, April 23, at 12:00 noon in Chemistry Building, Room C006 (the computer classroom between the Chemistry Resources Center and the Chemistry Library).

In this session you'll learn how to search STN effectively and economically. You'll be able to conduct searches to get the most information possible from the least amount of time and money. Learning how to use the EXPAND, INDEX, DISPLAY SCAN/TRIAL, and SET commands are a few of the ways that can make searching on STN easier. A step-by-step search planning process will also be discussed...it's the biggest $ saver of all. Please join us! Attendance prizes will be given away!

5. INULA RESEARCH INCENTIVE FUNDS

The InULA Board has awarded Research Incentive Funds totalling $1,225 to three IU librarians. Mark Day received funding to support attendance at the 1997 ACRL Conference, where he will be delivering a paper entitled "Challenges to the Professional Control of Knowledge Work in Academic Libraries: A Proposed Agenda for Organizational Research and Action. "Charlotte Hess received funding for travel to Uganda to conduct research on "how quality information access can be improved in developing countries and how developed countries can have better access to Third World knowledge and research." Liana Zhou received funding to support travel to Harvard University so as to research the topic "sexual repression during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), a project contributing to the Web Online Culture Revolution Center, co-sponsored by Pittsburgh University and Ohio State University." Congratulations to Mark, Charlotte and Liana.

6. INULA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

I am pleased to announce that the InULA Board has chosen co-recipients of this year's InULA Scholarship. The Award, totalling $1,200, will be shared by Eve Bates and Maeleah Carlisle. In evaluating applications for the Scholarship Award, the InULA Board considers three factors: the level of academic achievement, the quality of the letter(s) of recommendation, and the quality of the statement of philosophy of librarianship/information provision and career goals. Eve's and Maeleah's applications impressed the Board in all three areas, but members of the InULA Board were particularly impressed by their statements outlining their philosophy and articulating their career goals. In accordance with InULA policy, these statements will be published in an upcoming issue of InULA NOTES, and will also appear on the InULA Web Page. Congratulations to Eve and Maeleah, and best wishes for continuing success.
