7. INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUESTS VIA THE WWW MADE EASY (MAYBE)
Library users can place interlibrary loan requests on the WWW from their home or office and have the requests put into a standard database format for easy processing. The Ruth Lilly Medical Library currently manages ILL web requests using Borland Paradox, and a Perl script. All you need is access to a server running Perl 5 and a web form.
As opposed to email submission of ILL requests, this script puts requests directly into a delimited text file which can be uploaded into your favorite database program. The Medical Library uses this setup to generate statistical reports, electronically manage requests, and may eventually smooth the transition to the "paperless office" of the future.
DANGER! Other IU Libraries should not point to the Medical Library's web form because your users requests will come to the Medical Library's ILS Dept. AND WILL BE CHARGED. Each IU Library serves a clientele at no charge for interlibrary loans, so it will need its own customized form with logo and ILL department's addresses and policies.
