4. New Librarians and Staff Reception
1. THANKS!!!
Thanks to Erika Dowell (Fine Arts) and Jeri Anderson (Business/SPEA), co-chairs of the Retirement and Recognition Reception, and the rest of the Special Events Committee for a wonderful reception. This event is always truly special, and we appreciate the planning and hard work that went into continuing this tradition.
Chris Long, IU School of Law--Indianapolis, has published an article titled "The Internet's Value to Catalogers: Results of a Survey" in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, v. 23 no. 3/4 1997.
Effective May 27, Suzann Easter accepted the Department Secretary position in Library Personnel. She is coming to the Main Library from the Divison of Extended Studies where she has worked in an hourly position since October of 1996.
Effective May 9, Deanna Nichols resigned her position in the Lilly Library.
Effective May 15, Jay Wilkerson accepted the position of Reference/Technical Associate in Customer and Facilities Services. Jay is moving from Media and Reserve Services to Customer and Facilities Services.
Effective May 21, Yvonne Wittman accepted the position of Serials Conversion Coordinator for Government Publications Serials. Yvonne has worked in the Serials department since January of 1996.
ALICE WICKIZER
Alice Wickizer retired from the I.U. Library on January 31, 1997. She began work at I.U. in February 1968 as Assistant Librarian in Acquisitions and moved to the Documents Department in July 1970. She was named Head of Government Publications in June 1971.
Alice came to I.U. with a background in both public and technical services, having served as a librarian in university, public, and state libraries. Her education, interest and expertise in worldwide government, politics, history and economics served her well, as did her previous work in cataloging and reference.
She insisted that her staff give attention to the public service portions of their positions and that the librarians take their share of responsibility in building an excellent collection of government documents for use in a major research library. Her constant insistence on maintaining that collection will be of great benefit to I.U. Library users in years to come.
Her total experience as a librarian covered an interesting time in the history of government documents. When she began her library career the general attitude of librarians, even those in national libraries, was that documents were a problem to catalog and house, were poorly indexed, and were generally a nuisance. There has been a total turnaround in attitude nationwide. Government documents are considered essential, have become quite visible and accessible on the internet, and continue to be a vital part of research materials needed by todays' scholars.
PAT BOYER
Pat Boyer retired July 1, 1996 after working in the Serials Dept. since November 1979. This was sort of a "second I.U. career" for Pat as she had worked earlier in the University Controller's Office in Bryan Hall.
Her husband, Bob, retired from I.U. Radio/TV last February after working there for many years and they are now free to do what they like best to do - travel - visiting friends and especially their children and grandchildren. They took their first cruise late last winter, and I would imagine they are now addicted to "cruising", so we will probably hear that they have sailed off again soon.
Pat is very involved with all activities of her church and enjoys needlework and gardening. We've missed her, but I would bet she hasn't missed working.
VIVIAN WHALEY
Vivian Whaley retired in December 1996 after working at IU for 38 years, most recently in the Customer and Facilities Services Department. She was an outstanding employee and a great support to the department. We really miss her but know that she is pursuing her much-loved hobbies of sewing and reading.
