1. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Effective June 13, Hilary Jolly resigned her position as Head of the SLIS Library.

Mechael Gago, Assistant Head, Serials Department and Head, Serials Cataloging Unit, has just been elected Member-at-Large of the American Library Association's Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Serials Section. She will serve in that capacity as a member of the Executive Committee.

Gary Wiggins, Roger Beckman, and Keith Schreiber are co-authors of the "Chemistry" chapter in the 2nd edition of _Internet Tools of the Profession; A Guide for Information Professionals_. The guide was published by the Special Libraries Association and appeared just before the recent SLA National Meeting. Roger Beckman attended a reception for authors while at the SLA meeting in Seattle.

Cathy Gilbert-Jones (Chemistry Library) and Charla Westbrook (Customer & Facilities Services) received ETC Certificates of Completion at an annual awards ceremony on June 6. The ETC (Excellence in Training for Clericals) Program is a year long training and development program which provides both professional and personal development in four major areas: communication skills, business English and writing skills, computer and technology skills, and personal and career growth.

Effective May 9, Carol LeBras resigned her position in the Fine Arts Library.

Effective June 23 Julia Simic accepted the position of Public Services Assistant at the Lilly Library. Julia has worked in an hourly position in the Lilly Library for the past three years.

2. FRENCH CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS APPROVAL PLAN WEB PAGES

The Approval Plans staff of Monographic Processing Services are pleased to announce the addition of French Contemporary Authors to the Approval Plans Web Site. Parallel to the pages for the University Press, Science, and Social Sciences & Humanities Approval Plans, it features the lists of French Authors covered on the Plan, excluded series, and non-subject parameters. The site also provides general information on the Plan by way of a narrative description of the profiles.

This marks the beginning of the second development stage of the Approval Plans Web Site, which now consists of 48 files and 551KB of data. Forthcoming features will include additional publisher links, the background of each plan, help screens, and completion of the pages for the Spanish & Catalan Contemporary Authors and German Approval Plans.

The Approval Plans web site is of primary interest to bibliographers who already participate, others who are curious how they may be served by the plans, as well as students, faculty, and other library patrons. The French Contemporary Author Lists will be quite useful as a reference tool for students of French literature, since the Author Lists include names and dates for 678 prominent French authors of the last two centuries.

3. NOTIS 6.3 -- CHANGES TO THE CATALOG AND HANDOUT PLANS

NOTIS version 6.3 will not bring a large number of changes to the online public catalog (OPAC). There are only a few changes that are significant:

	1. The guide screens will now show EVERY heading.
This is a great improvement over IUCAT today, where guide
screens are one-screen summaries of the results of an
author, title or subject search which finds 50 or more
	    items and often "hide" headings.
	2. Guide screens and index screens now show more of the title,
even extending down to a second line.
	3. There is a new way to exclude superfields (.au., .ti., .su.)
from a keyword search. To exclude a superfield, simply
type TWO periods before the superfield name. For example,
to exclude books written by Freud in a keyword search, type:
	    freud..au.
	4. The choose command (CHO) will now appear on the lists of
commands at the bottom of all screens. The choose command
is used to save searches and re-try them in another catalog
on the IUCAT menu. We have been using it in NOTIS for
several years, but it has never before appeared on the
	    command list.
In addition, the changeover to Horizon circulation at IUPUI University Library, Herron School of Art Library, and the Columbus library this week also will have an effect on IUCAT. Circulation status information in IUCAT for materials in these libraries will no longer be accurate.

These changes will necessitate few revisions in the IUCAT handouts. Bigger changes will occur when the Columbus and IUPUI University Libraries implement the Horizon catalog later this summer. All IUCAT handouts will be revised and distributed by mid-August to incorporate the changes resulting from both NOTIS 6.3 and Horizon.

Anyone who has questions should feel free to contact Mary Popp (812-855-8170 or popp@indiana.edu).
