1. THANKS!!!

Thanks to Mark Feddersen and Emma Dederick and the rest of the Special Events Committee for an outstanding picnic. It was hot as blazes everywhere in Bloomington that day except at the picnic. How did you do it?

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Kudos to the planning committee and presenters of the Critical Thinking and the World Wide Web Workshop on July 16th.

It was a creative and thoughtful approach to a real challenge and one which will lead to better partnerships with faculty. Those to be thanked are: Julie Bobay, Kris Brancolini, Ann Bristow, Judy Dye, Erla Heyns, Jian Liu, Emily Okada, Mary Popp, Moira Smith, and Steven Sowell.

2. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Effective July 21, Matthew Jordan accepted the Accounting Assistant position in MPS. Before coming to IU, Matthew worked at Norwest Banks in Lubbock, Texas.

"MY FAVORITE MARTIAN" AWARD

Pat Riesenman received the "My Favorite Martian" Award from MARS (Machine-Assisted Reference Section, a section of RUSA (Reference and User Services Association) of American Library Association). Attached is the announcement, which will appear in the next issue of RUSA Update.

Congratulations, Pat!

Pat Riesenman was named "My Favorite Martian" at the 1997 Annual Conference in San Francisco. As the certificate states, the honor was awarded:

* for her good-humored mastery of all the details that make MARS work, from scheduling Martian meetings to archiving Martian minutes;

* for her energetic generosity and generous energy, graciously deployed to uphold high professional standards, to guide MARS through its first restructuring, and to synthesize, always with patience and insight, Martian tradition with Martian innovation;

* and for her most recent contribution to MARS as Martian Archivist Extraordinaire, herself the exemplar of all that is vital and memorable about MARS.

Pat Riesenman has been an RASD / RUSA member for all of her professional career, and an active member of MARS since 1979. In that time, she's served as first a member, then chair of the Education and Training of Search Analysts Committee; on the 1983 MARS Nominating Committee both in the early 1980's and again in the late 1980's; as the first MARS Scheduling Coordinator; and on the MARS Executive Committee in the early 1990's. She was both the MARS Representative to the RASD Organization and a vital member (then chair) of the MARS Planning Committee in the reorganization era of 1986 - 1991. We were able to convince her to become the first MARS Historian/Archivist in 1993, and hope to keep her as MARS Historian / Archivist for Life.

Pat Riesenman followed her doctorate studies at Indiana University (where she earned a PhD. in German in 1966) and her years teaching German Languages as a faculty member at I.U. with an MLS from I.U. ten years later. She has been a guiding light in the Reference Department of Indiana University Libraries since 1977 (!), and is soon to retire as Assistant Head of Reference there. She headed their Computer-Assisted Reference Service (CARS) in the formative and heady period 1978-1986.

Pat was also a co-founder and a very active member of IOLUG (Indiana OnLine Users Group); a key member of InULA (Indiana University Librarians Association); and BLFC (Bloomington Library Faculty Council). She took part in the United States Librarians' Visit to People's Republic of China (People to People program) in 1985, the same year that her article with David Pilachowski and Patricia Tegler, "Online Search Analyst and Search-Service Manager Tasks" appeared in RQ (RQ 24(4), Summer 1985, 403-410).

MARS, Indiana University, and these other organizations have all benefitted greatly from Pat's wisdom, clarity of vision, voluminous hard work, kindness and mentoring to her colleagues.
