Two Dental School Library staff members, Libby Halpin (Strain), Technical Services Specialist, and Mark Fitzgerald, Technical Services Assistant, were tragically killed in an automobile accident Wednesday, July 23. Amy Li, library science student, was injured in the accident and released. They were enroute to Heckman Bindery for new computer-assisted bindery training when the accident occurred near Wabash. Libby Halpin also worked for many years in the Bloomington Libraries Serials Department. We extend our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of our colleagues.

3. NEWS FROM THE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS DEPARTMENT
OPENHOUSE: GPD invites all IUB Library staff to come and explore the changes that you all have helped us make, on Thursday afternoon August 21, 2-4 p.m.
BOXES: Yes, we have boxes. During the conversion of materials to LC classification, we are reducing the use of the green file boxes. Many of them are old and do not have the "acid free" requirement for use in the collections. Most are in excellent condition since they have a wooden bottom. If Library staff would like some for personal use, come to the GPD reference desk. We are also reducing the need for the "acid free boxes" we have, but would like to offer these to library staff for use in the Libraries. We also have some spindle CD-ROM racks which other libraries might want for CD collections (GPD's collection has grown to two large cabinets). Please E-mail: Malcomb@indiana.edu if you need boxes or racks for your library.
Government Databases: The license agreement for the three CIS (Congressional Information Service) databases has been expanded to permit access from any library at IUB and will be listed on the IO Menu. These databases include: Congressional MasterFile (which indexes and abstracts publications of the U.S. Congress including committee prints, hearings and reports, dating back to 1789); Statistical MasterFile (SMF), the CD-ROM version for American Statistics Index (which covers federal statistical publications) , Index to International Statistics (covers publications issued by International Governmental Organizations like the UN and EU), and to Statistical Reference Index (covers publications of state governments but also non-governmental organizations like the NCAA); and U.S. Government Periodicals Index. If help sheets or information about searching these databases is needed, please consult the help screens or contact Lou Malcomb.
IIS microfiche: GPD has acquired and processed the backfiles of the microfiche library that accompanies the Index to International Statistics mentioned above. This assures (to almost 99%) users and staff that GPD will have the information identified in SMF. GPD had long subscribed to the SRI fiche and the ASI non-depository fiche. We thank the Collection Development Committee and Bob Goehlert for providing the needed extra support to permit GPD funds to be stretched for this acquisition. Contact Marian Shaaban for description of its content.
4. MAIN LIBRARY LOBBY WEST DISPLAY CASE
The Main Library west display case is available for the 1997/98 fiscal year. If you are interested in creating a display to promote a library unit, collection, or an Indiana University department as it relates to the library, please contact Yolanda Cooper-Birdine, 5-3403 or e-mail: ycooperb@indiana.edu
CIC Committee on Institutional Cooperation
The Committee on Institutional Cooperation began in 1958, nine years after seven libraries combined to form the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). The mission of the group was to provide cooperative, centralized access to rarely held research materials, and to share the challenges of preservation and collection development as automated systems appeared in libraries.
In the early 1960s recommendations were made for greater pooling of library resources predicated on the demonstrated excellence of CIC institution holdings. There was a growing need to make collections more readily available to scholars at large within these institutions, with the added benefit of effecting some economies in the process.
In the last 30 years, the CIC libraries have sought ways to address the cost of serial subscriptions, the deterioration of books and materials, strengthening collegial relations among librarians, and the development of a comprehensive program of library resource-sharing.
A number of cooperative projects have been developed:
* CIC Resource Sharing Project * Coordinated preservation microfilming projects * Library Task Force on Mass Deacidification * Interlibrary Loan Network Fax Project * Virtual Electronic Library (VEL) * CIC Center for Library Initiatives * Collaborative Access to Shared Electronic Resources * Electronic Journals Collection * HealthwebCIC updates will continue throughout the year in IUL News to outline some of the above projects and other current activities in the CIC.
