2. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

Bush Family Literacy Program Opens 1998 Competition

Family literacy programs with broad community support, a solid project design and an effective evaluation plan are top candidates for 1998 Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy grants.

Applications are now invited for the $500,000 annual grant program for family literacy projects that help parents and children simultaneously develop their reading skills to become more self sufficient.

To be eligible, groups must be public or private nonprofits that have been in existence for at least two years and operate a literacy program that has been providing services for at least two years.

Organizations such as school districts, institutions of higher education, libraries, correctional agencies, community-based organizations, churches and community partnerships may apply.

Projects must offer literacy training for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy services for children, or intergenerational literacy activities. Foundation officials stress that projects must include instruction and activities for both adults and children and must provide time in which families engage in literacy activities together.

Applicants may request up to $50,000. The deadline for proposals is Sept. 12, 1997. In 1997, the foundation awarded 12 grants, ranging from $7,000 to $50,000.

For more information or an application, call (202) 955-6183 between 1 and 5pm. EST or send e-mail to sooc@erols.com
