1. THANKS!!!

I sincerely thank all of the individuals and units who assisted the Neal Marshall Center Library (formerly the Black Culture Ctr. Library) with the move into our new home in Ashton Center - Coulter Hall, rooms 200-208. I especially want to thank Brenda Walker, Ron Hafft, Vaughn Nuest, Ben Baker, Gary Wiggins, Roger Beckman, and Eddy Dean. If I omitted anyone's name that I should have mentioned please forgive me. The experience of moving a library was certainly a *group* effort, and I am truly grateful to all who lent a helping hand.

--Grace Jackson-Brown, Librarian, Neal Marshall Center Library

2. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

It is my pleasure to announce that David Fenske has agreed to be the director of the Libraries' Digital Library Program. David, who is on leave to IBM this year, will return to Bloomington the last full week of each month. David's office will be in room E164 of the Main Library. (He will also retain an office in the Music Library.) This week David will be touring various areas and talking with staff about our digital projects. He will be assembling a team to assist him in realizing the objectives of the program. We will provide more information about the program as it takes shape.

3. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY ANNUAL REPORT PUBLISHED

I am pleased to announce that the digital copy of the "First Annual Report of the Indiana Geological Survey made during the year 1869" is available for viewing. This volume contains detailed reports of Clay, Greene, Franklin, and Vermillion counties. Interesting discoveries: Monroe County was the locale of the "Old Virginia Blast furnace" and Indian artifacts, including a pipe, were found in the "mounds" in Franklin County. The copy is located at: http://www.indiana.edu/~libgeol/cox1869/69cox.html

4. NEWS FROM THE HORIZON COMMUNICATION AND TRAINING COMMITTEE

The Following is a compilation of recent press releases by IU and Ameritech Library Services, submitted by the Horizon Communication and Training Committee.

Horizon 4.2 Installed at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The last few days of July were exciting and exhausting days for everyone at Ameritech, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library, Herron Library, and Columbus Library. After intensive preparation lasting more than six months and capping two years of joint development with Ameritech, the new Horizon system was brought into production, including circulation, acquisitions, cataloging, serials, reserves, and a web-based catalog, INDYCAT.

INDYCAT, Indiana University's prototype Web catalog, provides access to the holdings of IUPUI University Library, Herron School of Art Library, and the Library of IUPU, Columbus. These are the first three libraries in the Indiana University Library System to implement Horizon. Horizon will be phased in at other IU sites following the spring 1998 release of Horizon version 5.1.

"After this large a conversion you have some final data cleanup and bug fixes to be worked out. We are currently conducting usability testing of the Web OPAC in preparation for full production mode for the beginning of school in late August. We have an excellent team and relationship between our technical people and our library staff," said Phyllis Davidson, Director of Application Services at University Computing Services at IU.

IUPUI has been a long-time NOTIS user but sees Horizon as a way to take advantage of newer computer technology to provide additional capabilities for its staff and patrons. "A client-server system lets your personal computer do much of the work previously done by the mainframe computer, such as building and sorting lists of items. This reduction in the library's computer's workload will allow more users to have simultaneous access," said Delores Hoyt, Associate Executive Director, IUPUI University Libraries.

Although a telnet version of IU's catalog, IUCAT, has been available on the Internet for some time, this is the first time a true Web interface has been available. Development work continues on the Web interface. Currently it offers users the ability to search by author, title, subject, and keyword, with call number and course reserve searching to be available early in the fall semester. The URL for INDYCAT is http://www.indycat.iupui.edu.

On September 10, Myles Brand, President of Indiana University, Gerald Bepko, Chancellor of IUPUI, Dick Notebaert, Ameritech CEO, and Lana Porter, President of Ameritech Library Services, will join with staff at IUPUI in a ceremony to celebrate the unveiling of Horizon at IUPUI.

5. FUNDS AVAILABLE AT THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

The Office of International Programs has announced the availability of funds to support a second competitive round of exchange partnerships between units of Indiana University and foreign institutions of higher education. Administered by the Office of International Programs, the competitive program awards grants of up to $3,000.

The goal of the International Exchange Affiliations grant program is to establish and strengthen institutional relationships between individual Indiana University programs, departments, schools, and campuses and partner universities abroad. The program endeavors to expand the range of Indiana University participation in exchange activities with foreign counterparts to strengthen teaching and research skills among the Indiana University faculty.

Proposals should include plans for the exchange of faculty members for the purposes of research or teaching of one month or longer. The grant may be used to defray costs of travel, living expenses, health insurance, educational materials or communications. Budget requests may total $3,000 over a two year period, with a maximum of allocation of $2,000 in any one budget year. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify matching or supplemental funds from sources within the university as well as through external agencies. The application must document the institutional commitment of the partner university.

Indiana University International Exchange Affiliations grants are awarded through competitions. IU units should collaborate with their foreign partners on planning and preparing proposals and are responsible for submitting the applications. At Indiana University, participation is open to any program, department, school, or campus, or any cooperative combination of units. Deadline is March 31, 1997.

Inquiries about the program should be addressed to Susan Carty, Program Associate, Office of International Programs, Franklin Hall 311, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405, phone: (812) 855-7557; fax: (812) 855-6452; Internet: scarty@indiana.edu.
