1. CORRECTION

In last week's IUL News' listing of IU representatives participating in CIC working groups, Nancy Boerner was incorrectly listed as Linguistics Librarian. That should have been Jian Liu.

2. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

David Fenske and Jon Dunn recently demonstrated the Variations Project at the Internet2 member meeting held in Washington, DC October 7-9. Internet2 is a consortium of over 100 U.S. research universities working to create advanced, network-based applications and network services to further U.S. leadership in research and higher education. Variations was one of fifteen advanced Internet applications selected by Internet2 to be demonstrated at the meeting. In the demonstration, digitized sound recordings located on a server at Argonne National La b near Chicago were played in real-time from workstations set up in Washington across the National Science Foundation's vBNS (Very High Speed Backbone Network Service) network. IU was recently awarded funding from the NSF to receive its own connection to the vBNS.

Effective October 6, Mary Beth Hahn accepted the Reference/Technical Associate position in the Business/SPEA Library. Mary Beth has worked as an hourly Reference Assistant in the Business/SPEA Library for the past 15 months.

Effective October 9, Christopher Phillips accepted the Circulation/Technical Services Assistant position in Government Publications. Previous to this position, Chris worked in Customer and Facilities Services as an Assistant Circulation Supervisor.

4. ARTISTS' BOOKS EXHIBITION AT THE HERRON SCHOOL OF ART GALLERY - OCTOBER 8 - NOVEMBER 15

"UNBOUND: ART IN BOOKFORM/BOOK AS ARTFORM"

This exhibit concentrates on art in which the book form has been incorporated as a central symbol or motif, and books which have been produced through techniques usually reserved for the production of art. Four artists' works are highlighted: Mark Actander; Ronald Leax; Buzz Spector; and Margaret Wharton. The Fine Arts Library has loaned 12 books for this exhibition including works by SOFA students: Raymond Canavan; Peter Suchecki; and Lauri Twitchell. The Lilly Library has also loaned several works.

--B.J. Irvine, Fine Arts Librarian

5. FINE ARTS DISPLAY

"AMANDA BARROW: WORDS AND PICTURES"
October 20, 12 noon - 1 p.m., Rm. 238, FA Bldg.

A book artist who has studied papermaking and printmaking techniques in India during a Fulbright grant in 1992. Among other collections worldwide, her work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public and Boston Public Libraries, and the Museum of the Book, Netherlands. This display is sponsored by the School of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts Library/IU Libraries.

Observations by Amanda Barrow:

"Travels in New Zealand, India, and Europe in the recent past have enhanced my personal vision, leading me to dig deeper into the indiginous spiritual ambiance of the East in my artwork. Synthesizing these Eastern concepts with the Western visual language of my upbringing is my intention. I experiment with transparency and explore the inherent structure of my chosen medium. The resulting work presents a broad range of abstractions utilizing the book format as my primary source of inspiration".

6. SUGGESTION BOX

Just a reminder that there is a suggestion box in the third floor lounge of the Main Library. This box is checked regularly by Library Personnel. If you place a suggestion in the box with your name included, a response will be sent directly to you. We are also in the process of planning for a web site that will serve as an electronic suggestion box. An announcement will be sent when that is in place.

11. VIDEOCONFERENCE

The "New" Fair Use: Fresh Perspectives on Technology for Teaching and Research Thursday, November 6, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST Moderated by Kenneth D. Crews, Director, Copyright Management Center Panelists include:

Thomas Ho, Chairman and Professor of Computer Technology, IUPUI
		http://www.engr.iupui.edu/~ho

Suzanne Thorin, University Dean of University Libraries, IU thorin@indiana.edu

In an era of multimedia, web sites, videotapes, and digital scanners, each member of the university community is increasingly responsible for understanding the basics of copyright and fair use, and must know how to deploy them for advancing our educational mission. Too often we see copyright law as a barrier to our pursuits, but the law in fact provides crucial opportunities and rights for creative uses of educational materials. This lively and informative discussion will examine important and recent developments in fair use and will give direction for their new meaning throughout the academic community.
