1.
FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Effective December 1, Frank Quinn was appointed Assistant Head of the Reference Department of the Main Library at IU-Bloomington.

2. IUB MEDICAL SCIENCES AND BIOLOGY LIBRARIES WILL MERGE TO FORM LIFE SCIENCES LIBRARY

A reminder that the long-awaited merger of the Medical Sciences Library with the Biology Library is coming up soon. Dec. 22 will be the last day of service of the IUB Medical Sciences Library. Collections, furniture and equipment will be packed up on Dec. 23, and the move is scheduled for Dec. 29-31 (weather permitting--keep your fingers crossed!!) The merged library, to be called the IUB Life Sciences Library, will reopen on Jan. 2, 1998. It will occupy the same space and location as the current Biology Library (Jordan Hall A304).

This merger is a result of broader campus plans. The entire Medical Sciences Program, which has been located in Myers Hall since its inception, is moving to the newly-renovated west wing of Jordan Hall. Myers Hall will be completely renovated, and will eventually house the Indiana Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology.

--Pat Lovett, Head, Biology Library

3. STAFF WEB TUTORIALS

The Faculty/Staff Development Committee announces two hands-on web tutorial sessions for full-time staff.

Where: UGL computer cluster

When: Jan. 7 and 8, 11-2pm.

Staff trained in internet skills will be available during these sessions to consult individually with staff as needed on a drop-in basis. Come any time during the sessions to ask specific questions and to work hands-on with someone to show you beginning to intermediate level skills. This is not intended to be a class, and you do not need an appointment. We have listed below the type of help you can expect to get.

WEB TUTORIAL HELP PROVIDED IN THESE AREAS:

*Searching the World Wide Web using Search engines and other search software

*Using Netscape to move within pages and connecting to others

*Using Bookmarks in Netscape to save and retrieve sites

*Saving addresses, files, etc., e-mailing web information to yourself

*Printing blocks of text

*Bringing up internet pages that require a graphics reader like Adobe
    Acrobat

*Postponing an internet session, dealing with interruptions

*How to help yourself find something on the internet

*Using cut and paste when opening a web site
Handouts from UITS will be available, however this is not intended to be a time for staff to sit down and work through tutorials. We hope to offer you the type of personal attention that we offer our patrons at reference points, and we will treat all questions with equal respect.

For additional information on required technical skills for all library employees, see the DCSC review report. The URL for that is:

The "Required Technical Skills - All Library Employees" section is APPENDIX A.

4. LETRS ANNOUNCES NEW EXTENDED HOURS, IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY, AND A GROWING COLLECTION OF ON-LINE TEXTS

*New Hours*
Beginning immediately, the LETRS public facility area, located on the first floor of the research wing of the Main Library, will be open whenever the Main Library is open.

LETRS consultants will be available to assist you Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m and by appointment. During other hours, the facility will be open, but unstaffed. This change in staffing patterns will increase our ability to help people at IU access and create on-line texts.

*Improved Technology*
The LETRS public facility and world wide web server have all been recently upgraded. The public facility is now equipped with Pentium-class PCs running Windows NT 4 and PowerMac Macintoshes running System 7.6. We've also added an additional scanner connected to a Windows NT machine for our patrons to use in the creation of their own electronic text projects. This compliments the existing Macintosh-based scanning station. The new LETRS world wide web server is a powerful Sun Enterprise server and provides dramatic speed improvements to IU Bloomington and IUPUI patrons accessing the LETRS on-line electronic text collection at http://calliope.ucs.indiana.edu/

*New On-Line Texts*
The LETRS collection of on-line searchable texts and dictionaries continues to grow. Recent additions include "The Complete Works of Jane Austen" and "Goethe's Werke (Weimarer Ausgabe)". Look for more texts to be added in 1998.

Please come take advantage of our new extended hours and visit the LETRS facility to see all the changes. Also please browse the LETRS homepage at http://www.indiana.edu/~letrs/

6. INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA DEVELOPMENT GRANTS

Deadlines for proposals: February 27, 1998

Media Production, a division of Instructional Support Services and under the aegis of the Office of Dean of Faculties, is pleased to announce a competition for 1998-99 offering Instructional Media Grants. These grants are designed to support undergraduate and graduate instruction on the Bloomington campus. Though no salary is provided through this program, Media Production will provide all labor and materials - except in the case of extraordinary travel or materials costs.

Video or audio programs produced through these grants must be used in the classroom to improve or to enhance applicants' courses. Specifically, we are looking for projects that fill a particular instructional need, projects that solve a pedagogical problem or problems for a faculty member, a department, or a school. A minimum of four projects will be supported during the 1998/99 academic year.

Proposal forms and guidelines for proposals are available through Media Production. Contact Ralph Zuzolo, Director, Media Production at Franklin Hall M108, 812-855-1983; rzuzolo@indiana.edu
