3. INULA BOOK SALE COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES 1998 SALE!

Bibliophiles will want to mark their calendars for the Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA) annual Book Sale. The 1998 sale will be held on Sunday, April 19, and Monday, April 20, in the IUB Main Library, Room E174. Sale times and prices will be advertised later this month.

Donations for the sale are already pouring in. For this reason the Book Sale Committee is ready to announce the first "sorting party" of the year. Sorting will take place THIS Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM in the UGL 5th floor storage area. All volunteers may select some free books, and refreshments will be served in the UGL break room.

A non-profit organization, InULA supports professional development and continuing education for librarians, provides scholarships in the field of library and information science, and promotes increased communication among InULA members. For further information about the InULA Book Sale or "sorting party," contact Suzanne Mudge at (812) 855-8631 (smudge@indiana.edu) or Maryann Hight (812) 855-9857 (mhight@indiana.edu).

4. REMINDER - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT WYLIE HOUSE

Seed Sorters Wanted at Wylie House on Jan. 19

On Monday, January 19, from 10 am to 4 pm, volunteers are invited to come to Wylie House Museum to help clean and package seeds from the historic varieties of vegetables and flowers in the museum garden. A two-three hour shift per volunteer is suggested. Wylie House is located at 307 E. 2nd Street. For more information, call Larime Wilson at 333-9705. This volunteer activity is being offered as part of Bloomington's observation of Martin Luther King Day, and is a good opportunity to learn something about seed saving.

5. LIFE SCIENCES LIBRARY IS HERE!

I am very happy to report that the merger of the Medical Sciences and Biology Libraries was successfully completed during the holiday break, and we are now open as the Life Sciences Library! The move of collections, equipment and staff was accomplished in record time, finishing a day earlier than expected. Many thanks are in order for such a successful project. I want to especially thank Elizabeth Hanson, Robert Gowin, Eddie Bullard and Pam Wasmer for their hard work in preparation of and during the move, and Vaughn Nuest for his expert advice and guidance with the whole planning process. Planning for the move was started several years before I arrived, and thanks go to Steven Sowell and Doug Freeman for their earlier planning efforts. Also, thanks to Odette Shepherd for coordinating technical services changes, and to Lisa Figg for implementing necessary IO changes. IUCAT records now display the location "Blgtn Life Sciences Library" for items formerly held in either location. Thanks also to Ron Hafft for getting all of our computers set up, and Melissa Stewart for coordinating the campus services we needed. Finally, a special thanks to Tom Swafford, Director of Space Management, for his support and guidance before, during and after the move.

The library doesn't really look very different (just a little more crowded!), but stop by and see us when you're in the area!

--Pat Lovett, Head, Life Sciences Library

8. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION EXHIBIT

Flanner House, the first social service center for the Indianapolis African-American community, celebrates its centennial in 1998. To mark this anniversary, the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives at IUPUI University Library presents the exhibit "A Century of Service: Flanner House, 1898-1998" now through the end of March. The exhibit highlights many of the programs offered by Flanner House during its existence and the people who played major roles in making Flanner House a model social service center known and respected nationwide.

The photographs and documents used in this exhibit come from the Flanner House Records collection, donated by Flanner House to the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives in 1996. The collection includes board of directors' minutes, committee and division reports, publications, and photographs.

The exhibit is located in the reception area of the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, Room 0133 on the lower level of the IUPUI University Library. The archives are open Monday, Thursday, and Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. - Noon. Call (317)274-0464 if there are any questions about the exhibit or the Flanner House Records collection.

9. IU MUSIC LIBRARY AUTHORIZED FOR NATIONAL LEVEL ENHANCE

The Music Library Technical Services Division has recently received National Level Enhance authorization from the Library of Congress Regional & Cooperative Cataloging Division. This means that IU music catalogers will be able to contribute and edit fully authorized OCLC records as part of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging/Bibliographic Cooperative Program (PCC/BIBCO). See http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pcc for additional descriptions of these programs. Music format authorization (for scores and sound recordings) will be added to IU's existing OCLC book format authorization. IUB's IOCM/Original Cataloging Unit was one of the first participants in BIBCO (formerly NCCP, National Cooperative Cataloging Program). Music participation has been enabled by the kind assistance and instruction by that unit, in particular by Marty Joachim and Sylvia Turchyn. BIBCO records meet nationally agreed upon standards along with fully authorized access points and are therefore shareable without additional review by LC, and OCLC/RLIN users.

11. BLOOMINGTON LAW LIBRARY MILESTONE

In December, the Bloomington Law Library added the 600,000 volume to the collection. The volume count at the end of 1997 stood at 600,041. The 500,000 volume was added in November of 1993. No particular book was singled out for the honor, unlike the 500,000 volume which was represented by a first edition copy of Oliver Wendell Holmes' classic, "The Common Law."

12. SLIS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Distance technologies enable librarians to earn certification

This spring marks the end of a successful first year of the Indiana University Library Education Certification Program. Offered by the School of Library and Information (SLIS) and School of Continuing Studies, the program uses distance learning technologies to enable students statewide to enroll in graduate-level courses that might not otherwise be available in their areas.

"We are very pleased to offer these courses via distance learning," says Debora Shaw, associate dean in the School of Library and Information Science, "because it enables working students to complete their course work on a flexible schedule."

Courses are delivered evenings and Saturdays on most IU campuses and in Evansville via the Virtual Indiana Classroom (VIC) Network and the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS). The VIC Network uses two-way video and audio to allow students to see and hear each other. VIC classrooms are located on all the IU campuses. IHETS uses one-way video and two-way audio technologies to reach 300 satellite receive sites in Indiana.

Students in the Library Education Certification Program can use the courses to qualify for work in libraries where a complete master's degree is not required, meet certification requirements established by Indiana's State Library Certification Board, and earn credit toward a Master of Library Science (M.L.S.)
