3. NEWS FROM THE PRESERVATION COMMITTEE

The Libraries Preservation Committee is planning two educational events this Spring. In February an exhibit highlighting the "Cost of Health Care for Books" will be installed in the Main Library lobby display case. In April the Committee will sponsor a viewing of "Into the Future: On the Preservation of Knowledge in the Electronic Age," with responses by a panel of librarians and computer experts.

The Libraries Preservation Committee supports the Preservation Department's mission by sharing information, ideas, and priorities with the Department, the IUB Libraries, and the Libraries Administration. The Committee 1) promotes campus library-wide awareness of preservation as an essential component of collection management and customer service, 2) advises the Preservation Dept. Head and the Libraries Administration about preservation-related needs and priorities, and 3) works on projects as charged by the Library Administration.

In order to promote communication campus-wide, committee members are appointed by the Library Administration from among librarians, PAs and support staff, with representation from the Main and Campus libraries (including the extra-system libraries). Current members are: Jeff Graf (chair), Andrea Morrison, Roger Beckman, Emily Okada, Lori Dekytdspotter, Nancy Boerner, Elaine Hehner, Phil Bantin, Keith Welch, and Lorraine Olley (ex officio).

6. MELLON GRANT AWARD

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Awards Grant to Indiana University To Prepare African and Slavic Studies Librarians

A $164,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) Libraries will be used to launch a program that prepares area studies Ph.D.'s for positions as research librarians.

Indiana University boasts eight international programs that are recognized and awarded funds through the U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource and Fellowship Program. Two of these programs--the African Studies Program and the Russian and East European Institute--will serve as models as Indiana University advances the field of area studies with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation award.

"We're rethinking the entire approach to educating area studies librarians," Dean Thorin says. The post-doctoral fellows will apprentice under an area studies librarian--in this case either Nancy Schmidt, African Studies Area Bibliographer, or Murlin Croucher, Slavic Studies Area Bibliographer. The fellows will also gain critical hands-on experience by working with the appropriate academic department at Indiana University and traveling to other libraries with extensive African or Slavic collections. In addition, the fellows may audit selected relevant courses at IU's School of Library and Information Science.

"At a time when interest in global studies is gaining scholarly importance and widespread popularity, area studies librarians play a critical role in helping others to understand the world's cultures," says Suzanne Thorin, University Dean of University Libraries. "We want the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries to play an even greater role by helping to prepare these valuable specialists." Indiana University's goal is to increase the pool and the talents of those entering the profession of area studies librarianship.

The fellowship program builds on the strengths of the collections of the IUB Libraries. The African Studies Collection includes materials in European and more than 30 African languages and is considered by many to be among the top five collections nation ally. The Libraries' Slavic Collection has exceptionally strong holdings for the Bohemian lands, the Hapsburg Empire, Poland, Slovenia, and Yugoslavia. Of particular importance is the Estonian collection, considered by many to be unsurpassed in the country.

Martha Brogan, Director of Collection Development and University Bibliographer, will coordinate the program. For information, contact her at mbrogan@indiana.edu or (812)855-3403.
