4. FINE ARTS LIBRARY EXHIBITION

"Manuscripts Illuminated: The Production Process of the Hand-Made Book" Fine Arts Library Exhibition, February 24 - March 20

Holly Silvers is the curator of this exhibit which explores the production process of medieval books. An excerpt from her exhibition statement:

In this industrial age, the majority of our books are machine made
and often of materials that do not withstand a decade, let alone
a thousand years. With "Manuscripts Illuminated" I seek to enlighten
viewers to the process taken to produce books in the days when a
book was truly a luxury item (not merely text to scroll through
on the internet). This exhibit will feature actual parchment,
pigments, tools and gold leaf, in addition to facsimiles of
manuscript pages. Hopefully, viewers will walk away with a new
appreciation of an object that is nowadays often taken for
granted and with a realization that the so-called "Dark Ages" were
not as dark as we would believe.

In addition to the resources of the Fine Arts Library, I will also
use sources and tools from my own collection and from those of
Jim Canary at the Lilly Library and Dr. Eugene Kleinbauer, who
	have generously offered their assistance.
--Erika Dowell, Assistant to Branch Head, Fine Arts Library

6. COPING WITH TECHNOSTRESS

Are there times when you feel overwhelmed by technology? Do you deal with colleagues or patrons who feel the same way? If so, then plan to attend "Coping with Technostress: How to Stay Sane in Interesting Times," presented by the IUPUI Library Faculty. We are able to offer this half-day workshop for FREE because of the generous contributions of the Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA) and the Indiana Chapter of ASIS. The workshop will be held from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. on March 27 in the IUPUI University Library Auditorium and our speaker will be Dan Jackson from the St. Vincent Stress Centers. This program is open to all IU Libraries personnel and members of Indiana ASIS. Participation, though, is limited to the first 100 respondents. Be on the look-out for further details in your campus mail, or contact Chris Long at 274-1930 (celong2@iupui.edu).

7. "INTO THE FUTURE" SEMINAR

Please mark your calendars for "Into the Future," a seminar to be presented on Thursday April 23 from 1:30-3:30 in Main Library E174. The focus of the program is the problems of managing, preserving and providing continuing access to digital information. Dean of Libraries Suzanne Thorin will introduce the program, which will also include viewing of the documentary "Into the Future: On the Preservation of Knowledge in the Electronic Age." Panelists Phil Bantin (University Archives), Howard Rosenbaum (SLIS), Dave Vernon (UITS), and Lorraine Olley (Preservation) will briefly address some of the issues highlighted in the video, with open discussion to follow. This event is sponsored by the Libraries Preservation Committee, with co-sponsorship by the SLIS student chapter of SLA and the Indiana University Librarians Association.

For a preview of the key issues to be discussed at this seminar see "Whoops, there goes another CD-ROM," by Laura Tingley in the February 16, 1998 issue of "US News & World Report" (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/980216/16digi.htm)

8. DON'T FORGET TO USE THE MASTER CALENDAR!

There is a master calendar in Libraries Human Resources where we list most meetings and training sessions that have been widely announced. Suzann Easter (sleaster) maintains this calendar, and you can let her know if you want something listed. If you're scheduling a meeting and want to avoid conflicts, consulting the master calendar may help.

9. INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS

Guidelines 1997-98

The Office of International Programs offers grant opportunities to support libraries and librarians at any IU campus for a range of projects and activities aimed at developing the international collections of their libraries, or enhancing their ability to take advantage of international opportunities regarding library development. Types of proposals supported include: international travel to specific world areas for print and media acquisitions; domestic or international travel to examine special collections that might enhance the university's holdings, or to collaborate with colleagues at other institutions on international projects; domestic or international travel to special book or media fairs featuring international content; visits to funding agencies in the U.S. or abroad to identify and coordinate support for special or unique library projects with an international focus. One-time funding is also available for projects that enhance user access to IU's international collections and resources.

Proposals must have a major international dimension. Proposals will be enhanced if they can demonstrate a commitment of matching funds from relevant units (area studies centers, departments, schools, or the IU Libraries). Acquisition travel proposals must include a commitment from the campus library that acquisition funds will be available.

ELIGIBILITY: Tenured and tenure-track librarians at any IU campus
