1. STAFF NEWS

May Jafari, IUPUI University Library, Instructional Team, presented a paper titled: "Teaching Information Technology Skills to Adult Learners: The IUPUI Instructional Teams Initiative" at the 15th Annual International Conference on Technology and Education(ICTE)in Santa Fe, NM, March 10, 1998.

The InULA Board is pleased to announce that Lou Malcomb has been awarded a $800.00 Research Incentive Fund grant for her research project: "Preserving Indiana's Cartographic Heritage: Indiana Maps at IUB." Lou plans to investigate and develop models for gathering information for a bibliography of early Indiana maps available at IUB. One of her goals is to publish a bibliography of Indiana maps on the internet. Congratulations Lou!

Judith Booker, Head, Serials Accounting Unit, Serials Department, retired on March 31, after 35 years of a distinguished career at Indiana University. Judith joined the Libraries Serials Department in 1974. She capably led her unit in its operations and through the many changes in policies and practices, whether internally due to automation, because of vendors new systems and capabilities, or due to the various serial markets conditions. A strong team player and an active membe r of the department management team, Mrs. Booker's contribution has been significant in the continued strength of serials operations. We will miss her but our best wishes go with her as she enjoys her new life.

Effective March 30, Allen Hutchison accepted the Digital Library Systems Administrator position in the Cook Music Library. Allen previously worked in the Advanced Information Technology Labs at UITS. He is working toward a BA in Cognitive Science.

Effective March 30, Richard Ring accepted the Technical Services Assistant position in the Education and HPER Libraries. Rick has worked at the Lilly Library in various part-time capacities.

2. ALA-SC BAKESALE

****The ALA-SC is having a BAKESALE!****

When: Monday, April 6, from 8:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m.

Where: In the hallway just outside of the SLIS office.

Why: To support the ALA-SC and the hard work we do to promote
professional development for students here at SLIS!

We will have lots of goodies! Cookies, cupcakes, crispy treats, and even some really fancy stuff! Come and see! We'll also have coffee, tea, and SLIS mousepads. Hope to see you there. Thank you!

3. APRIL FEST: STUDENT RECOGNITION AND DIVERSITY CELEBRATION DAY

On Tuesday, April 7th, the IUB Libraries' Special Events Committee will sponsor our Annual APRIL FEST! This event gives us all a chance to recognize our wonderful students and celebrate cultural and ethnic backgrounds of library employees, by sharing desserts and snacks from different countries, ethnic groups, and regions of the U.S.

Please put this important event on your calendar and encourage your students to come and enjoy the festivities. There will be door prizes for the students, international food and lots of good conversation.

4. WYLIE HOUSE TOUR

The Faculty Staff Development Committee cordially invites you to tour the Wylie House Museum, April 16th, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Home of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie, and his family, the Wylie House is located at 307 East Second Street, on the northeast corner of Second and Lincoln. Street parking is usually available on Second Street directly in front of the museum, or around the corner on Lincoln. The tour is limited to 20 people and sign up is on a first come, first served basis. To register please e-mail Cinda May . All requests for participation will be acknowledged. Due to the limited parking available, participants may wish to consider sharing rides.

This survey is intended to collect information from librarians working on the regional campuses as to whether they are interested in serving on university-wide Indiana University Libraries Faculty Council (IULFC) Committees during the upcoming year. This information will be used by the IULFC Regional Campuses Nominating Committee to determine the representatives from the regional campuses to the IULFC and to place librarians on a variety of IULFC committees.

Information on the function and composition of each the committees is found in the Indiana University Libraries Library Faculty Handbook. These IULFC positions are the governance voice of the regional campuses.

6. FRIENDS OF ART FINE ARTS LIBRARY BENEFIT DINNER

On the evening of April 24, the twelfth annual Friends of Art F.A. Library Benefit Dinner will be held in the Fine Arts Library. Kathleen Foster, Curator of 19th- and 20th-century American art at the IU Art Museum will speak at our pre-dinner event on "'Being Lucky': Recent Adventures in American Art History". Based on two books published in 1997, she will be speaking first about the art and life of the little-known English watercolorist, the naval captain Joshua R. Watson, focusing on his drawings and watercolors of the early American landscape. Drawing from her second book, she will provide an intimate tour of the studio of Thomas Eakins, one of the country's most celebrated painters.

7. WORKSHOP IN MUSIC CATALOGING

8. DON'T FORGET TO USE THE MASTER CALENDAR!

There is a master calendar in Libraries Human Resources where we list most meetings and training sessions that have been widely announced. Suzann Easter (sleaster) maintains this calendar, and you can let her know if you want something listed. If you're scheduling a meeting and want to avoid confl icts, consulting the master calendar may help.

9. POSITION AVAILABLE AT SOUTH BEND

Reference Librarian/ Library Instruction Coordinator. Assistant Librarian. Primary responsibility for the coordination and development of the Library Instruction Program, including instruction sessions, workshops, credit courses, and collaborative teaching. Students, faculty and staff are instructed in the use of traditional and electronic resources using a variety of methods and media. Additional responsibilities include working regularly scheduled hours at the reference desk (including evening and weekend rotation) and maintaining the instruction handout collection. Some collection development responsibilities possible. Required: ALA-MLS and experience in teaching, training, or library instruction. Familiarity with a variety of electronic reference applications. Energetic, motivated, and creative professional with a strong service orientation. Ability to work well as a team leader and team member, as well as independently; relates eff ectively with varied clientele. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and be able to meet the responsibilities of a tenure-track appointment.

Preferred: Academic library experience; knowledge of HTML and presentation software. Reports to the Director of IUSB Schurz Library Services. Twelve-month appointment beginning August 1, 1998 will be at Assistant Librarian rank. Salary: $28,500. First consideration given to applications received by May 11, 1998.
