5. UPDATE FROM THE REFERENCE DEPARTMENT, IUB
We have just completed the installation of a second high speed networked HP laser printer to our web cluster. The printers are both adapted to duplex printing in order to cut our paper costs in half. This cluster also includes two "Multi-Lingual" workstations supporting the correct display and printing of web pages from many linguistic families (all Pan-European languages, including all Slavic languages and other European languages that make use of diacritics, and CJK - Chinese, Japanese and Korean). They are the only such public web workstations we know of. Read more about it at http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/multi
We also continue to maintain a large cluster of standalone stations serving many compact disk products; many titles resident in this cluster have migrated to network distribution. That is our goal for most and many more will as web based versions become available. A newer title of general interest is Women'sR, a full text product which offers access to some journals we do not own in print and may be of interest to those in Women's and Gender Studies. It is published by the same group that provides Ethnic Newswatch. A complete list of all titles in the cluster is in preparation and will be on our website within the month.
Last, we want to remind you about some web searching aids of use to all of us on all campuses:
"Reference Collection" (http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/db/refcat) This search page allows a discrete search of the 40,000 volume Reference Collection in IUB. Since our reference collections across the state share many common titles it may be helpful to all in using local collections as well as in locating additional resources. We use it regularly and find it extremely helpful. It also automatically generates a monthly new acquisitions list.
"Search Libweb" This very powerful search engine (using Infoseek's software) which appears on the sidebar of most all top IUB Libraries' web pages (URL: < http://www.indiana.edu/~lbsearch/iulib">http://www.indiana.edu/~lbsearch/iulib) is searching the pages of most all our libraries, system-wide. Sometimes that can be frustrating when looking for a common resource we all own but it can be incredibly useful when looking for a fairly unique resource (for instance "Lilly Library Manuscripts" or "Ruth Lilly Special Collections" or "World News Connection", formerly FBIS -- that will work too!) The search engine was funded by the endowment of the Walden Librarian, Julie Bobay.
6. CALL NUMBER LABEL REQUEST REMINDER
All requests for call number labels and call number corrections must be sent to Shelf Preparation in MPS, Main Library E350. Do not address them, or use old flags addressed to, Bindery, Conservation, or Preservation. Contact Linda Kamoji (lkamoji@indiana.edu, 855-1666) if you have any questions.

7. PLUG-IN TO THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY FROM YOUR OWN LAPTOP!
The IUPUI University Library (UL) now has over 300 study carols with dedicated connection lines to the IUPUI campus network. Patrons who bring laptop systems with network cards into the UL will be able to access online services and servers on the campus network, and also the Internet!
As of April 20, 1998, network cards will give patrons access to the campus network where they can utilize a special UL server. This server will offer the entire suite of library digital research and reference databases and information services directly from the laptop. It will create a window on the user's laptop, which looks and works just like the Library Information System interface on the over 250 Public Scholar's Workstations located in the library.
The University Library is one of the first libraries in the country to make all their information databases available to walk-in laptop users. Utilizing new technology, the UL staff has deployed a Citrix WinFrame server, which will initially allow 25 users to concurrently access library information resources. In another technology-first for libraries, this service actually gives users access and use of CD-ROM resources via the Internet. The technology is scalable, so the UL can increase the number of users if the demand merits such a decision. As an Internet based service, the Citrix WinFrame system will eventually be made available to the entire campus and then anywhere on the Internet. Access outside the building will depend on blending user identification and authentication needs into the campus-based user databases.
To make library services available on laptops, the Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) thin client software provided by Citrix needs to be installed. The software is free and is available:
1) in the UL on diskette for $3.00,
2) via the campus FTP server,
3) as a download from the library homepage.
More information will be available in handouts at the University Library and on the Internet at: http://www-lib.iupui.edu/toolbox/ranotice.html --Norman Brandenstein External Relations Team IUPUI University Library Indianapolis, Indiana (317) 278-0232
8. FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AWARDS FOR U.S. FACULTY AND PROFESSIONALS
The competition for 1999-2000 Fulbright scholar awards opens on March 1, 1998. Opportunities for lecturing or advance research in nearly 130 countries are available to college and university faculty and professionals outside academe. 10. CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: IPSE CONFERENCE AT ISU NOV. 4-5
Librarians - we especially encourage your participation in shaping this event!
An All Partners Conference sponsored by the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education will be held at Indiana State University on November 4th and 5th, 1998. The conference theme will be "Steering the Bandwagon: Utilizing New Media for Course Development and Support." The two-day event will be open to all who are interested in issues of distance and distributed learning development and support, As was the case with the October 1997 conference focusing on asynchronous courses held at Purdue, one of the two days will be geared especially to issues of development and delivery. The other day will be geared to issues of student support in today's technological environment. An advisory group composed of faculty and staff representing all institutions of the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education, including the Independent Colleges of Indiana, is working with IHETS staff to plan the conference. This group invites the submission of proposals for presentations on both days of the conference.
We're interested, in general, in innovations in technology-delivered distance or distributed learning and its support, and in policy concerns related to this innovation. What has been tried? What works or doesn't work? What has been found effective? Discussion of complete courses, or of programs, is especially encouraged.
We are interested in receiving proposals from faculty, administrators, learning center or campus coordinators, librarians, technologists, or students, or in proposals for panels including representation from more than one of these groups. The proposals should include the following information:
* the title of the proposed presentation
* the name(s), title(s), and contact information for the presenter(s): for sessions with multiple presenters, please indicate a primary contact and also include complete information for all presenters
* a summary of the proposed presentation in 300 words or fewer
* an abstract of 60 words or fewer, to appear in the conference program
* special audio-visual and/or network requirements (an Internet-connected PC equipped with PowerPoint and a means of displaying the screen will be made available for all presentations requiring this facility)
Proposals should be received electronically at IHETS by Wednesday, May 6. Those submitting proposals will be notified of their status by mid-June.
