4. Thank You

The Libraries' participation in the month-long Summer Orientation and Registration for Freshman was a success thanks to all the people who volunteered to talk with students and their families at the Resource Fair, lead tours of the Main Library and do lar ge group presentations. The Orientation Office estimates that over 6000 freshmen and their parents participated in Summer Orientation and Registration. The efforts of the following individuals, who took time out of their busy work days, went a long way to help these new students feel welcome and comfortable on campus and in the libraries!

The Libraries were well represented at the Orientation Resource Fair which was held four days a week from June 23 through July 24 from 10am until 12:30 pm. The following individuals helped staff the Libraries' information table: Betty Andis, Rita Barsun, Eric Bartheld, Cynthia Baxter, Diane Dallis, Erica Dowell, Anne Foster, Elizabeth Knoerle, Randy Lent, Gail McKenzie, Ann Minde, Matt Myers, Emily Okada, Gwen Pershing, Mary Popp, Marian Shabaan, Pat Steele, Mary Strow, Carolyn Walters and Celestina Wrot h.

Diane Dallis, Lou Malcomb, Emily Okada and Carolyn Walters gave 2 presentations each to parent groups. These multi-media presentations (video and PowerPoint) produced by the Orientation Office, described academic support services, including library servi ces, available to students. Staff from other campus units also participated in these presentations which were given to groups of 100-200 twice a day, four days a week, June 23 through July 24.

Rita Barsun, Eric Bartheld, Nancy Boerner, Becky Cape, Diane Dallis, Erika Dowell, Judy Dye, Anne Graham, Elizabeth Knoerle, Lou Malcomb, Ann Minde, Moira Smith, Pat Steele, Carolyn Walters, Charla Westbrook, served as guides for tours of the Main Library that were offered 4 days a week from June 23 through July 24.

Diane Dallis and Emily Okada were the Libraries' liaisons to the Orientation Office and coordinated the Libraries' activities. Penny Foster scheduled all the volunteers.

Indiana University Copyright Management Center
Announces
The Second
Indiana University
Online Copyright Tutorial

The Copyright Management Center for Indiana University is delighted to invite you to participate in this innovative and updated opportunity for learning about the meaning of copyright for your teaching, research, and other activities at the university. T he Indiana University Online Copyright Tutorial is a series of short, informal, readable, and (we hope) helpful messages delivered to you in electronic form, via a listserv, approximately three times per week. The new series will begin September 2 and ex tend through the fall semester.

The principal mission of the Copyright Management Center is to inform the academic community about copyright. The inaugural offering of the tutorial attracted more than 2,200 subscribers. Here are some of their comments:

"Just enough information per message to digest without straining the brain or the eyes!"

"Very helpful. I plan to use many of the links and references far beyond this tutorial."

"I was glad to be able to participate without having any affiliation with the University, and found the lessons intelligently written, thoughtful, and thought-provoking."

"I found the tutorial stimulating, informative, and I've been recommending it to colleagues."

"One of the real strengths of the program was the length of the messages. They were short enough to be able to fit into a busy schedule, but long enough to address meat."

"The best feature was the clarity of the writing. I used to work for lawyers and I never met one who spoke actual *English* until now. :-)"

Copyright is rapidly changing. The inaugural tutorial has been revised and updated to include new trends, developments, and strategies in copyright, such as:

* A new court decision that directly addresses the fair use of historical and literary manuscripts for scholarly purposes;

* Legislation in Congress that may change the term of protection for copyrights;

* New court rulings about the possible immunity of state colleges and universities from infringement claims;

* Developments in the law for distance learning; and

* Congressional action to create new "copyright-like" protections for databases and to secure digital information resources.

While this tutorial is designed particularly for educators, librarians, and staff--especially at Indiana University--anyone who is interested is welcome to subscribe and be a part of it. We also welcome previous subscribers who are looking for a refresh er and coverage of new developments.

To subscribe, simply send an email message to: listserv@listserv.iupui.edu.

Leave the subject blank and do not use a signature block. The full text of your message should read: sub Copyright-Online-L [your real name] For example: sub Copyright-Online-L Jane Doe

After your subscription has been received, you will receive a "confirmation request" to which you must respond. You will be required to reply to the message with the word "ok" in the body of the reply message (do not include a copy of the message sent to you -- only the word "ok"). This will confirm that your email address is valid. Following the confirmation, you will receive an email message indicating that you have been subscribed. The message will provide "rules" about how the list functions and instr uctions for un-subscribing from the list.

For additional information about the tutorial, visit: http://www.iupui.edu/it/copyinfo/online_tutorial.html

8. Information Open House

The IUB Main Library will host an Information Open House on August 30th in the lobby from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. This is an opportunity to tell new students about library services as well as the many academic, cultural, recreational opportunities available to IU students. The open house is an official Welcome Week event that most new students will attend on the day before classes begin. Participation in this event is open to departments, organizations, or units that provide services to students on the IUB ca mpus. During the open house students will get information about the services of all participating campus units, see demonstrations, and talk with staff.

You can participate in one of three ways:

In addition to various services and resources displays, brochures, etc., there will be a "Library Jobs" table where students can find applications for various jobs available in the IUB library system. If you would like for your job application to be incl uded, please deliver as many applications as you like to Diane Dallis, W121 Main Library by August 27th. The applications must include the department name so that if students wish to fill out the applications at the open house, we will be able to collect them and distribute them to the appropriate department.

For more information about the Open House, call Undergraduate Library Services at 855-9857 and ask for Diane Dallis (ddallis@indiana.edu) or Emily Okada (okada@indiana.edu).

9. Don't Forget to Use the Master Calendar

There is a master calendar in Libraries' Human Resources where we list most meetings and training sessions that have been widely announced. Suzann Easter (sleaster) maintains this calendar, and you can let her know if you want something listed. If you're scheduling a meeting and want to avoid conflicts, consulting the master calendar may help.
