B. J. Irvine's paper on the "Dual Master's Degree in Art Librarianship at Indiana University" has been translated into Russian and published in the serial LIBRARIANSHIP AND BIBLIOGRAPHY ABROAD, no. 138-139, 1997. This paper was previously published in the ART LIBRARIES JOURNAL (U.K.) and was originally delivered at the IFLA Conference at Barcelona, 1993. Irvine was honored to receive a copy of this publication from Ludmila Kozlova, Chief, Dept. of International Library Relations, Russian State Library.

On the occasion of her retirement, the members of the Serials Department would like to formally recognize and thank Odette Shepherd for her outstanding forty years of service and dedication to the Indiana University Libraries.

Head of the IUB Serials Department since 1967, Odette has always demonstrated an exceptional level of leadership and routinely set a high standard of excellence within the department. From her work on the NEH Indiana Newspaper Grant Project to her contributions to the CIC Coordinated Preservation Microfilming Committee to her creative efforts with regard to acquiring and providing access to online electronic journals, Odette has worked very hard to help move Indiana University Libraries into the twenty-first century.

Of particular note during Odette's tenure was the successful conversion of manual kardex check-in records to the online serials control module in IUCAT. Her managerial style was the key ingredient in providing a smooth and effective transition from the paper to the online environment. Odette was also instrumental in acquiring CONSER (Cooperative Online Serials Program) participant status for the Serials Cataloging Unit and served as the official Indiana University representative to the CONSER Policy Committee. During the past nineteen years, Indiana University Libraries has been nationally recognized for its online cataloging and bibliographic control of serials.

Odette has been a visionary leader in implementing new trends in the field of serials. She understood the importance of making Indiana University's serial holdings known nationally for the purpose of union listing and inter-library loan. As project manager, Odette oversaw the Federal Title IIC Grant "On-Line Union List of Serials Project." The creation of these volume-specific holdings records is what ultimately led to the successful conversion of over 80,000 local data records from our OCLC offline product into Indiana University's first online catalog in 1990. It provided online access to up-to-date bound holdings information for all serials housed in the various libraries on the Bloomington campus.

A life member of the American Library Association, Odette is also a member of the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). Other memberships include the American Society for Information Science, the Association for Information and Image Management (formerly the National Micrographics Association), the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians, and the Indiana University Librarians Association.

During her distinguished career as a serialist, Odette served on a variety of committees at the national level. Under ALCTS, she served as Chair of the Large Research Libraries, Serials Discussion Group and was a member on the International Relations Committee, the Preservation Microfilming Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Program Planning Committee for the 1986 Annual Conference. Under the ALCTS Resources Section, she served as the Serials Section representative on the Bookdealer/Library Relations Committee. As a member of the ALCTS Serials Section, Odette chaired the Serials Acquisitions Committee and the Review Committee to Study the Serials Cataloging Committee.

Odette is a superb librarian who represents the best of all aspects in librarianship. Her strong business and managerial skills, coupled with her understanding of the needs of scholars, teaching faculty, students, and the various units within the Libraries, have won her well-deserved respect among the members of her department as well as her fellow colleagues. Those of us who have worked closely with Odette over the years know that she consistently strove for perfection in herself and inspired all of us to do the same. It is to her credit that whatever the challenge "du jour," Odette managed to foster a unanimous feeling of pride and achievement within the Serials Department and always recognized and acknowledged our individual and collective contributions to the department and to the Libraries.

--Mechael Gago, Assistant Head, Serials Department

4. "CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS FROM CAMEROON" AT THE FINE ARTS LIBRARY

This small exhibition of crafts is part of an exchange between Indiana University and the University of Yaounde I in Cameroon. Jean-Paul Notue, Associate Professor, Art History/Anthropology, at the University of Yaounde I and Visiting Scholar at IU, brought many of the objects with him when he arrived in Bloomington this spring with the intention that they be given to the University. Objects include works in wood, fiber, metal, and beadwork. The exhibit also includes objects from the collection of Virginia DeLancey, Associate Director of IU's African Studies Program.

"Contemporary Crafts from Cameroon" will be on display at the Fine Arts Library through the weekend of July 4.
