4. Major Gifts to Fine Arts Library
1. STAFF NEWS
With the celebration of Glenn Read's retirement drawing to a close, I'm pleased to announce that Julie Nilson has accepted a one-year appointment as the Acting Librarian for Latin American Studies, effective August 1, 1998. Julie brings to the position more than three decades of experience in the Library, particularly in acquisitions, and a long-standing commitment to Latin American Studies. Her affiliation with Latin American Studies extends from her early language training in Portuguese under the auspices of a Ford Foundation grant to graduate-level coursework in Latin American Studies and from professional service as the Library's Latin American Studies cataloger to her more recent leadership in our Latin American Retrospective Conversion Project and in CIC's coordinated preservation microfilming of Latin American materials. Julie, who is currently taking a scenic vacation route to ALA, will move her office to E660 in the Research Collections later this summer when she joins SALC as a full-time bibliographer. The Libraries are fortunate to have someone with Julie's talents and subject expertise to step into this position with important area studies obligations.

3. MELLON POST-DOC FELLOW SELECTED
I am pleased to announce that Christopher Gigliotti, who earned his Ph.D. in Slavic linguistics from UCLA in December 1997, has accepted an appointment as Indiana University Library's first post-doctoral Mellon Research Library Fellow in Slavic Studies, effective August 31, 1998. Dr. Gigliotti received his B.A. with Distinction, majoring in Russian language and literature, with a minor in Japanese, and went on to pursue a Master's degree in Slavic linguistics from the University of Virginia. He is the recipient of numerous competitive teaching and research assistantships, including a one-year appointment at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies where he assisted Professor Gail Lenhoff in completing a social and literary history, Early Russian Hagiography: The Lives of Prince Fedor the Black (Harrassowitz, 1997). In addition to excellence in scholarly pursuits, Dr. Gigliotti has extensive experience in utilizing relational databases and computer technology. In his letter of application, Dr. Gigliotti noted: "... I am eager to use my educational background to pursue a career in library science.... I can truthfully say that the job of Slavic research librarian strikes me as an ideal means of utilizing my skills and interests in a rewarding and lasting career." In short, Dr. Gigliotti impressed the Selection Committee as an energetic, personable, and talented scholar who has great potential to contribute to research librarianship. In the coming weeks, we will be organizing Chris's orientation and training within the Library; your suggestions and participation are encouraged. In the meantime, I would like to thank the Selection Committee-Jackie Byrd, Murlin Croucher, Andrew Durkin, Denise Gardiner, Lila Fredenburg, and Michael Parrish-for their efforts to bring this search to a timely and successful conclusion. The fellowship program is funded by a three-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of training a successor generation of area studies specialists in research libraries. A similar program for Latin American Studies librarianship has been underway at Duke University Library for several years.

4. MAJOR GIFTS TO FINE ARTS LIBRARY
This summer the Fine Arts Library has received two major gifts. Thanks to the generosity of Julie Nilson, we have purchased an outstanding artist's book by David Bunn, THE SEA IS A MAGIC CARPET, 1997, $800.00. This work is a conceptual piece that documents sections of the discarded main card catalog of the Los Angeles Central Library and the sheaf catalog of the Liverpool Central Library (closed in 1990). N7433.4.B85 L6 1996 Special.
As part of his M.F.A. show in ceramics, John Slavonic exhibited a series of ceramic sculptures which used the metaphor of the miner involved in various states of "gathering data and knowledge". He has given "Repository" to the Fine Arts Library. This is a stunning sculpture which is now permanently installed on the main floor reading room of our library.
Please take time to visit the Fine Arts Library to see these exceptional additions to our collections.
