1. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Bob Goehlert, Subject Specialist for Economics, Political Science & Criminal Justice, has been awarded the first annual Marta Lange/CQ Award. Established by ACRL's Law and Political Science Section in memory of former LPSS chair Marta Lange and funded by Congressional Quarterly, Inc. the award honors distinction in law and political science librarianship.

Bob will receive a $1,000 prize and a plaque. The award will be presented at a continental breakfast reception at the ALA annual conference in New York, Monday, July 8, 8:30-9:30 am, immediately before the LPSS program. The award letter stated that Bob's "record of scholarship and professional service is most impressive, and sets a very high standard for the Marta Lange/CQ Award."

Polly Grimshaw, Librarian and Subject Specialist for Sociology, Anthropology, Folklore, Women's Studies and Psychology, retired December 31, 1995. She had been Subject Specialist for Sociology, Anthropology and Folklore since 1965, adding the other responsibilities later. She also became Adjunct Professor of Women's Studies in 1986 and Adjunct Professor of Folklore in 1992. She also supervised the Human Resources Area File, and was instrumental in bringing the MLA Bibliography's Folklore volume to Indiana University in 1989, adding supervision of its preparation to her responsibilities. She was the 1988 winner of the Jenkins Award " for outstanding contributions to the Indiana University Libraries and to the library profession." She is the author of Images of the Other: A Guide to Microfilm Manuscripts on Indian-White Relations (University of Illinois Press, 1991).

Polly will be greatly missed by her colleagues and by the patrons who flocked to her office for assistance, but the strong collections she built will continue to remind us of her expertise and her dedication. Her plans for retirement include work on her current research, a study of cultural encounters with Native Americans as reflected in the letters of seventeenth century New England immigrants, and traveling with her husband Alan.

Andrea Singer is currently serving as Acting Subject Specialist for Sociology, Anthropology, Folklore and Women's Studies, half-time, and is in the E750 office in the mornings.

Frank Quinn, Reference Department, is the new fund manager for Psychology.

GRANT PROPOSAL ASSISTANCE OFFERED

Dear Library Colleague:

I am pleased to inform you that the Library Development Office can offer assistance in preparing grant proposals for library-related projects, including those in library services, collections, electronic applications, and faculty enhancement.

I met many of you while working on the first issue of the library newsletter during fall semester. I would welcome the chance to work with you again to help you find information on potential funding support--for an existing project or an idea--from private, state and federal, corporations, and foundations.

Bring me your ideas about possible funding sources. If you will let me know your areas of particular interest, I will notify you when I receive information about funding opportunities for projects in these areas. I can then help you review, edit, and prepare your draft proposal, get appropriate signatures, and prepare your document for mailing.

Our office will notify the Dean of University Libraries, and Sponsored Research Services of your intended project to avoid multiple requests for funding from the same organizations.

Regarding requests for funding, you will need to know:

Can you prepare a tentative budget for your project? Is there a time requirement within which your project must be completed?
Can you prepare a solid draft proposal for a specific project to meet the funder's deadline?
Has your department head approved your project? Does your grant require a match from IU or any other institutional support?
Does your funder require projects to be related to and completed within a geographic area? Will you need to document every step of your project? Submit reports? Meet interim deadlines?

Please call me if I can be of assistance at any stage of your research or proposal preparation. You can reach me at 855-9294 Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Friday noon-5 p.m., or email maparks@indiana.edu.
