4. NEWS FROM RUTH LILLY MEDICAL LIBRARY

A grant proposal to the National Library of Medicine entitled "Internet Library Services for Indiana Medical Education" was funded for one year beginning February 1, 1996. This proposal provides computers and printers for each the eight Centers for Medical Education; a high speed scanner at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library; Grateful Med software for searching MEDLINE and electronic requesting of documents; and Ariel software to transfer the document to the site through the Internet. Search training for faculty and students was also included i n the proposal.

Approximately half of the Indiana University School of Medicine students receive the first two years of medical education at one the eight Centers for Medical Education located at Indiana University campuses and other host institutions throughout the state. The Centers hosted at major research institutions make use of local libraries for their information needs. The Centers at other locations depend on the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis for supplying their information needs. This proposal should improve library service to these sites by reducing delivery time and enhanced resolution of documents.

5. EAST ASIAN LIBRARY RESOURCE SHARING ON WWW

The East Asian Collection (IUB) has joined five other CIC East Asian libraries in developing a World Wide Web (WWW) server for East Asian resource sharing. The six East Asian libraries (those of Indiana, Ohio State, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin) are currently working on a Title II-A funded project called Advanced Technology in Support of Resource Sharing for East Asian Studies. The goal of the project is to set up World Wide Web server on each campus with links to Web sites of other participating libraries and post resource information through scanning and digitizing tables of contents of selected journals, subject bibliographies, data files, etc. to facilit ate remote use of their East Asian collections by researchers. Under the project, each of the participating libraries has received federal funds to purchase the hardware and software needed for transmitting CJK resources and maintaining the system on the internet. With the technical assistance of the library's Automation Office and the Electronic Resources and Services Department, the East Asian Collection's Web server is now up and can be browsed at: http://www .indiana.edu/~libeast
