1. THANKS!!

Thanks from Library Personnel to Nancy Cridland, Elaine Hehner, and David Smith for selecting books and inserting bookplates for the Student Recognition Reception. We know this was VERY time consuming and appreciate all the time and effort that was put into it.

2. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Effective May 1, Patricia Lovett accepted the position of Head of the Biology Library. Prior to coming to I.U. Pat was Biological Sciences Librarian at the University of California, Irvine. Pat has a B.A. in Biological Sciences and an M.A. in Library an d Information Sciences.

Effective March 29, Kathy Anderson resigned her position as Data Archivist in University Archives.

Effective April 8 John Pate accepted the position of Delivery Services Coordinator in Access Services. John has worked in an hourly position in Access Services for the past two years. He is currently working on a degree in Continuing Studies.

4. SPRING CONCERT APRIL 12TH

The Archives of Traditional Music will sponsor its second and last concert this spring as part of its Friday Noon Concert Series in the Hoagy Carmichael Room. The concert, on April 12, will feature Amandla Ugetsi and Heather Adou performing acoustic African jazz.

The members of Amandla Ugetsi bring together musical influences from West and South Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean, as well as New Orleans and New York City. The focus of the ensemble is the interaction between the rhythmic sophistication of African an d Afro-Caribbean musics and the linear improvisation and stylistic interaction of American jazz. Performers Chris Smith (guitar) and Rob Mulligan (percussion) will be joined by vocalist Heather Adou, who also plays balafon and ngoni. They will perform a mixture of original compositions, Malian folk songs, and commercial tunes of Caribbean and jazz roots.

The Archives of Traditional Music is proud to present these performances on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. in the Hoagy Carmichael Room, Morrison Hall 006. Take advantage of the wealth and variety of musical talent present in Bloomington! All concerts are free and open to the public. Bring your lunch and join us! 5. RESEARCH FORUM APRIL 16TH

The next Research Forum will be on Tuesday, April 16, from twelve to one in the Ground Floor Conference Room, 043. Mary Strow has been pursuing new directions in dance research, and she will tell us her tales Tuesday. Join us for her "Update on Research in Dance Bibliography"--bring your lunch and join us Tuesday!

6. NEWS FROM THE BIOLOGY LIBRARY

Beginning with the building and occupation of our new mezzanine, there have been a number of changes to the Biology Library this year. We'd like you to come by and see them, so we're having an Open House on Tuesday, April 23 from 3 to 4:30. Coffee and cookies will be served on the mezzanine. We hope to see you then.

7. INDIANA/WALDEN MODEL PRESENTED AT ANNUAL MEETING

Sherrill Weaver, Walden University Library Liaison, and Harold Shaffer, Head, Access Services, IUL-B, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools on March 25 in Chicago. The paper "Developing an Inter-Institutional Agreement to Deliver Library Services to Distance Education Graduate Students" described the development of the contract for library se rvices between Walden University and Indiana University, or the Indiana/Walden model as it is now called.

8. BETA PHI MU INITIATION

All IU Librarians and friends are cordially invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony in which 1995 SLIS graduates will be initiated into the Chi (IU) Chapter of Beta Phi Mu International Library and Information Science Honor Society. A breakfast at which the ceremony will be held will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 1996, at the Indiana State Library. This is during the Indiana Library Federation Annual Conference.

In addition to the initiation, the Chi Chapter award will be presented to Barbara Evans Markuson, recently retired Director of the Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA). Ms. Markuson will address the initiates and guests on "Designing Library Services for the 21st Century."

Cost for the breakfast is $8.00, payable in advance. Anyone wishing to attend who did not make reservations as part of the ILF Conference registration should contact Chi Chapter treasurer Penelope Mathiesen (pmathies@ indiana.edu) to make reservations.

Please plan to attend this ceremony honoring outstanding graduates and an outstanding professional in library and information science.

9. INULA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Hillary Byrn and Cindy Lee Stokes, both current student at Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), have received scholarship awards from the Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA). The annual competition requires applicants to submit a statement of philosophy of librarianship/information provision and career goals, along with at least one letter of recomm endation and documentation of academic standing. The 1996 competition attracted over twenty outstanding applications, and special congratulations are due to the two awardees, each of whom will receive $500 inaid of their continuing pursuit of SLIS master' s degrees.

Hillary Byrn, a Bloomington resident, became interested in library and information science through her employment in the IU Bloomington libraries, where she continues to work as she pursues her degree. Cindy, also a Bloomington resident, was most recently employed as an analyst at the IU Budget Office, a position she left to become a full-time SLIS student.

As provided by the conditions of the award, the philosophy and goals statements of both award winners will be published in an upcoming issue of InULA Notes on the InULA World Wide Web site.

The InULA board and membership offer sincere congratulations to Hillary and Cindy! And we thank all the applicants for their interest and for their excellent applications which made the selection process an enjoyable, although rigorous, endeavor for the board members!
