1. THANKS!!!

Elizabeth Hanson and Laura Gabbard want to thank several people who have helped us get the Medical Sciences Library home page up before Laura returns to Serials. Julie Bobay facilitated our getting HTML training before the regular classes were set up and Yolanda Cooper-Birdine did an expert job of providing that training. In addition, Kay Martin and her staff expedited our receipt of an HTML book which has proven very useful.

3. IN HONOR OF LINA

In response to the many people asking the best way for the Libraries to memorialize Lina Duncan, a special fund has been established that will be used to purchase a tree on the IU campus in honor of Lina. We are hopeful the tree can be planted on the grounds of the Main Library this September. In order to accomplish this, a $200 gift must be raised by Labor Day (September 4, 1995). With the gift, a tree will be selected by the University Horticulturist, a permanent endowment is added to provide lifetime maintenance for the tree (and replacement if necessary) and a permanent plaque is placed at the base of the tree. The plaque will identify the tree (both by common and scientific names) and read "Memorial to Lina Duncan by her Friends and Colleagues in the IU Libraries." While the Horticulturist will make the final selection of the type of tree, he does welcome suggestions. Contributions for the memorial tree are tax deductible gifts for charitable purposes and checks should be made out to the IU Foundation/Lina Duncan Memorial. Cameron McGuire (Main Library C-2) will collect and tally the gifts and see that Physical Plant gets the tree planted. If you wish to participate in this program, please send your check to Cameron McGuire and include any thoughts you have on the tree selection. We plan to hold a brief ceremony at the tree planting to dedicate it and remember Lina. If there are any funds remaining after the tree gift, they will be used to purchase a book that will have a plate affixed that reads the same as the tree plaque. Remember, for us to get the tree planted this year, the money must be collected by September 4, 1995, otherwise the campus waits until the next September to plant new trees.

4. SEARCH AND SCREEN COMMITTEE FOR DEAN OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES: PROGRESS REPORT

The job announcement (available in Library Personnel) has been submitted to the Chronicle of Higher Education, College and Research Libraries News, and several academic library electronic discussion groups, with a closing date of October 15. A letter inviting nominations for the position will be mailed to all Indiana University faculty and librarians. The preliminary calendar for the Committee is to bring semi-finalist candidates to Indiana in early 1996 and send final recommendations to Vice President and Chancellor Gros Louis by March 15. Our goal is to have a new dean in place in Summer 1996.

We hope to make this search process as open and accessible as possible, and invite nominations, suggestions, and comments from all constituents. We will try to keep librarians and library staff informed of our progress by periodic reports in IUL News. We also plan to inform ourselves of the issues and concerns across the system by scheduling open meetings with library staff on each campus in the next two months.

5. PRESERVATION AWARENESS MATERIALS AVAILABLE

We all know how stressful the beginning of the school year can be on library staff. Consider the impact of all those new or returning library users on the collections! This is a good time to display and distribute the bookmarks, posters, and bookbags created by the IU Libraries Preservation Committee to remind users to take care in handling and using library materials. IUL preservation awareness materials are available free to Bloomington campus libraries and on a cost-recovery basis for regional campus libraries. To order any of the materials, or to request a free sample packet, contact Lorraine Olley, Preservation Dept., Main Library E050 (olley@indiana.edu, 855-6281).

6. SECURITY STRIPS FOR HECKMAN-BOUND VOLUMES

Since the Libraries first began to use theft detection systems, the practice has been to purchase security strips (Tattletapes, later Knogo strips) centrally, and send supplies to Heckman as needed for insertion into volumes being bound there. The recent rise in prices for security strips now makes it economically advantageous for the Libraries to let Heckman order strips as well as insert them. Heckman charges only $.05 per strip (plus labor); the Libraries pay Knogo and 3M from $.07 to $.13. Besides saving money, having Heckman furnish the strips eliminates keeping inventories and calling the Supply Office when Heckman runs low. To make the change to having Heckman furnish the security strips, please contact the customer service representative, Debbie Brown, at 219/982-2107. Also notify Melissa Stewart in the Supply Office (855-1626 or STEWAR) that you are making the change. The Supply Office will continue to order and distribute Knogo strips for application in the libraries.

The Heckman Bindery also requests that security strips in unbound periodical issues be placed at least 1/4" up from the gutter margin of the piece. Strips that are placed down into the inner margin damage the milling equipment and can cause torn pages.

If you have questions or comments about either of these topics, please contact me (855-6281 or OLLEY).

7. IUB LIBRARIES WORLD WIDE WEB: PROGRESS AND NEXT STEPS

Gwen Pershing, Education Library, has agreed to chair the combined Public and Staff WWW Design Committee which is responsible for designing the central WWW Home Pages and gopher menus/documents. Gwen has led the NOTIS Screen Design Committee for several years and has many years of public service experience in several IUB libraries. Gail LaMoreaux-McElhany, Electronic Resources and Services Department, will be an ex-officio member of the committee and will provide ongoing maintenance, content coordination, and publication and graphical design expertise for this committee and other IUB Libraries WWW Information Providers. Gail is a graphic artist, with extensive background in graphic design both in higher education and industry, and has experience in developing and supporting ongoing library instruction programs.

The first versions of the IUB Libraries Public and Staff Home Pages have been successfully created and now include links to all the services removed from the AIE, plus more. More than twenty departments in the IUB Libraries have created, or are in the process of creating, valuable services and resources for library staff and users. In addition to the accomplishments of many individuals working on their departmental WWW services, the members of the IUB Libraries Home Page Design Committee and the IUB Libraries Staff Home Page (Behind-the-Scenes) Design Committee have done an excellent job of defining content, categories, and design principles for the IUB central home pages, and they have done it within a very ambitious deadline. Special acknowledgement goes to Carolyn Sherayko for design and organizational work and to Yolanda Cooper-Birdine for coordinating library-wide training in Netscape, Lynx, and HTML.

Thanks to the efforts of these many individuals and groups, the IUB Libraries' WWW is a resource on which users and staff are increasingly relying. The appointments of Gwen and Gail to the WWW Design Team will provide staff, resources, and expertise to sustain this growing resource. Gwen will call the committee together soon to decide on next steps.

8. SCIENCE APPROVAL PLAN REPORT

Academic Book Center, the vendor for our Science Approval Plan, has issued a report of the activities on our plan during the last fiscal year, July 1994 through June 1995.

Based on our profile, 753 books were automatically shipped. The vendor also supplied 4163 bibliographic slips. We selected 896 titles from those bibliographic forms. So a total of 1649 items were shipped for fund managers to review. Returns from both categories totaled less than 1 percent, 13 items.

While this approval plan is smaller than the University Press Approval Plan, the fund managers concerned have managed to define the profile successfully to meet their needs.

During this fiscal year, the fund managers and MPS staff will have online access to the vendor's approval plan inventory, listing the status of orders, etc.

If anyone is interested in seeing the full report, which also details the reasons for each return, copies are available in the Monographic Processing Services Department from David Smith and Barbara Henn and from the Science Librarians.
