
2. MUSIC LIBRARY AT IUB TO CLOSE FOR EXTENDED BREAK:
Friday Dec. 15th 5:00 p.m. -- Monday Jan. 8th 7:30 a.m.
The Indiana University Music Library, Bloomington, will close Friday
December 15th at 5:00 p.m. for three weeks to enable the move of its
collections and staff into new facilities. The library will reopen on
Monday January 8th as the William and Gayle Cook Music Library in the
Bess Meshulam Simon Music Library and Recital Center. Telephone numbers
will be unchanged, and mail sent to our present address will continue to
reach us.
During the hiatus, telephones will be unanswered or disconnected; e-mail, snail-mail, and fax communication will be interrupted; the Music Library's World Wide Web site will be down; interlibrary loan requests cannot be filled.
We regret any inconvenience. After reopening, we ask your patience during what we hope will be a smooth and brief startup period.

3. FEBRUARY FEST
Please mark your calendars for the Libraries' next special event. The
February Fest will held on Thursday, February 15, from 3:30-4:30 in the
3rd floor lounge. Watch IUL News for more information about this event.
Dates of other events are: Student Recognition Reception (April 9, 3:30-4:30), Retirement & Recognition Reception (May 23, 2:00-3:30), and the picnic (July 18).
4. CONFERENCE REPORT
Dolores Hoyt, Giles Hoyt and Ruth Reichmann were organizers of a
conference, "Towards a Survey of German-American Museums,
Historic Sites, Archives and Libraries in North America," held Nov. 3-4,
1995, in Indianapolis. This conference was sponsored in part by a
grant from the Max Kade Foundation and by assistance from the IUPUI
University Libraries. The purpose of the conference was to
demonstrate a prototype Web-site database and homepage for
resources relating to German-Americana, and to develop the nucleus of
a grant proposal that would support creation of electronic databases as
well as link together Max Kade German American Center resources and
other major German-American resources, including sites in Germany.
Participants included people from such groups as the German Historical
Institute, the Palatines to America, the Center for Migration Studies,
Bremerhaven, Germany, and a number of Max Kade Centers. The
following IUPUI University Library personnel participated in the
development of the Web resources and presentations at the
conference: Robin Crumrin, Dolores Hoyt and Steven Schmidt. Please

We have a full schedule of training and development opportunities for the
spring semester. Listed below are the workshops being presented in the
Main Library by HRM trainers. We are also scheduling several UCS classes
to be presented for library employees at the Indiana Memorial Union. The
classes are Shakespeare and Pine (EZMail), Introduction to Windows, Basic
Wordperfect for Windows, Advanced Wordperfect for Windows (desktop
publishing), and Paradox for Windows. Dates will be announced early next
month. In addition to the UCS classes, a library expert in Lotus will be
presenting Lotus classes for library employees during the spring semester.
Human Resources classes (Ground Floor Conference Room):
"Preparing Job Manuals"--Tuesday, February 20, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Presenter
will be Sue Gastony.
"Stress Management"--Tuesday, March 19, 9:00 a.m.-noon. Presenter will be Sue Gastony.
"Handling Difficult Customers"--Thursday, March 20, 9:00 a.m.-noon. Presenter will be Deb Nelson.
"Supervising Student Employees"--Wednesday, April 10, 9:30-11:30. Presenters will be Deb Nelson and Jan Nickless.
On Wednesday, January 31, 9:00-11:00, Brenda Bailey-Hughes (HRM) will meet with interested supervisors to talk about developing on-the-job training programs. This meeting will be for supervisors of students as well as for supervisors of staff. She will then work over a period of time with individual supervisors to tailor a program to meet specific needs.

6. IUB LIBRARIES WWW HOME PAGE REDESIGN

available at no charge for paper copies; it is also available on the
Internet by e-mail or ftp.

following the date of this newsletter.
The WWW Design Committee will implement a new IUB Library home page on
December 18. Library patrons should find it easier to use the new and
improved home pages. The link to Behind the Scenes has been removed from
this page. A working group will begin to evaluate the IUB Libraries staff
home page in January. Library staff may continue to access Behind the Scenes
at OCLC PUBLICATIONS HAVE ARRIVED IN M P S:
1) "OCLC access ... expanding your options" This is a 3-page publication
briefly describing the five ways to access OCLC: internet, dial access,
multidrop line, multidrop line via local area network, and TLP
(Telecommunications Linking Program).
The William Jenkins Award Committee members were incorrectly listed in the
