7. SCHOOL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE WINS FEDERAL GAANN FUNDS

The Indiana University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) was approved recently for funding of a three-year Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) project, becoming the only library and information science program in the nation to be awarded such Federal funds.

GAANN, a project of the U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Act Title IX, part D, provides fellowships to assist graduate students of superior ability who demonstrate financial need. The program aims to sustain and enhance the capacity for teaching and research in areas of national need, which this year included biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer and information sciences.

Under GAANN, SLIS will be awarded $358,395 in Federal funds, or 79.9% of total allocated project funds, over three years to fund six PhD fellows in information science. SLIS and the IU Research and University Graduate School will contribute the remaining 20.1% of project funds, or $14,950 each per year. Allocated funds will total $448,095.

Over the next three to five years, GAANN funds will help SLIS develop a cadre of knowledgeable scholars, innovative researchers, and teachers of information science, said Verna Pungitore, Director of the SLIS Doctoral Program, who spearheaded the grant initiative.

These information scientists will specialize in information storage and retrieval systems, human-computer interaction, multimedia information systems, or networked electronic information, Pungitore explained.
