1. IUB LIBRARIES WORLD WIDE WEB PRAISED

The IUB Libraries World Wide Web was cited in the December 1995 issue of "MacUser":

"An excellent university library Web site can be found at Indiana University (http://www.indiana.edu/~libweb/index.html). Borrowers can renew books over the Net and submit interlibrary loan requests. From this site you can also search other library catalogs throughout the world."

2. NEW IUB MUSIC LIBRARY DEDICATED NOV. 17

Among the top academic music libraries in the country, and a technological leader among Bloomington campus libraries, the IU School of Music Library celebrates its advances in library services with the formal dedication of its new library on Friday, November 17.

Named the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, the new library comprises three floors and 55,000 square feet of the recently completed Bess Meshulam Simon Music Library and Recital Center, located on the corner of Jordan Ave. and Third St. The Library and Recital Center also houses the Auer Concert Hall, the Ford Recital Hall, a lecture hall and lobby. According to David Fenske, Director of the Music Library, the new library will offer more technological services than any other large music library in the country.

The 600,000 cataloged and uncataloged items in the music library's collection are still being moved to their new home from the three separate locations where they currently reside (the Sycamore Hall Music Library, the Record Library and the Performing Ensembles Division). But Fenske expects the new library will be open for use the first day of second semester classes in January 1996. However, there will be several opportunities to tour the new library's expansive facilities during the weekend dedication events.

The celebration begins at 7 p.m. Friday in the Musical Arts Center with a dedication ceremony and concert featuring the IU Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kurt Masur. A grand reception and tours of the Library and Recital Center building will take place at 9:30 p.m.

Dedication events continue on Saturday, Nov. 18, with public demonstrations and tours of the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, from noon to 6 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the new library building, Jane Gottlieb, president of the Music Library Association and head librarian for the Juilliard School of Music, will give an open lecture titled: "The Future of Music Libraries and the Role of Music Librarians."

Following Gottlieb's lecture, mini recitals will take place in Ford Recital Hall on the half hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Additional mini recitals and tours will be given on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. Special concerts requiring advance reservations will be presented Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, Nov. 18-20. For further information about these and other dedication events, contact the School of Music Publicity Office at (812) 855-9846.

4. SUPERVISORS' P & T SEMINAR

There will be a seminar for all supervisors of librarians on Thursday, November 30, 1:00-3:00 p.m., in the Ground Floor Conference Room (043), Main Library, Bloomington. It is especially important for anyone who supervises a non-tenured librarian to attend this seminar. The Promotion and Tenure Committee has recently completed its review of this year's dossiers, and information from the Committee based on its examination of those cases will be valuable to anyone responsible for evaluating librarians. The guidance given to librarians by their supervisors as they progress toward tenure and promotion is critical to the success or failure of their cases.

To register for the seminar, please contact Marilyn Shaver.

5. HOLIDAY PARTY COMING SOON...

Hold that date! The Special Events Committee is already hard at work planning the best Holiday Party ever!

Mark Thursday, December 7, 1995, from 3-4:30 p.m. on your calendars for this special chance to celebrate together. More details will be forthcoming soon.

6. WILLIAM EVANS JENKINS LIBRARIAN AWARD

The Jenkins Award Committee is asking for nominations for the 1996 Jenkins Award for outstanding librarianship. Current and former Bloomington librarians are eligible to receive this award. The nomination form follows this article.

Please take the time to consider the professional contributions and achievements of your colleagues and to make nominations. The award consists of a certificate and $500. If more than one individual is given the award, the $500 will be shared equally by the recipients. The winner will be announced during National Library Week in April, and the award will be presented at the Retirement and Recognition Reception in May. The recipient's name will be added to the plaque in the Main Library lobby.

Nominations should be submitted by February 1, 1996, to Marilyn Shaver, Personnel Officer. Librarians nominated in the previous year will remain nominees for the current year. The chair of the Jenkins Award Committee will contact nominators for updated information.

The criteria for selection are one or more of the following:

*has made a professional contribution which has had significant influence on the operations of the IU Libraries;

*has made a significant professional contribution which earns the recognition of the University community;

*has made a significant contribution to the library profession which reflects achievement in librarianship at IU;

*has shown excellence in service to the IU Libraries as evidenced by continuous leadership and innovation.

A history and description of the Jenkins Award and the complete guidelines are in the Bloomington Library Faculty Handbook. You can also receive a copy of that document by contacting Marilyn Shaver or Betty Andis. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the members of the committee: Betty Jo Irvine (chair), Becky Cape, Ruth Davison, Wen-ling Liu, and Julie Nilson.

Nomination forms and supporting documents are due by March 1. The supporting documentation should include a current curriculum vita (compiled by the nominee) and three letters of support (requested by the nominator).

7. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR WHITE AWARD

Employees of the IU Libraries holding an MLS or equivalent degree are invited to submit applications for the Herbert F. and Virginia White Professional Development Award. The Award has been established to support the career growth of individuals who have chosen librarianship as a profession. An application form is included in this announcement.

GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPOSAL

The White Award is to be used to support the professional development of employees of the IU Libraries who have earned the MLS or equivalent degree.

The applicant for the White Award should write an essay clearly stating his/her intentions and expressing how the project or activity will fit into the individual's career goals. The essay should describe the activity in detail, stating when and where it will take place, including an itemized list of anti- cipated expenses, and the expected benefits to the individual's professional growth. A variety of activities- possibly, though not necessarily, related to research and/or continuing education- may be considered. When judging the relative merit of proposals, quality, not quantity will be important.

The White Award will not support the purchase of materials for the IU collections, or tuition fees covered by the University in the form of fee courtesy.

Eligibility: Employees of the Indiana University Libraries eligible to apply for the White Award include those persons in clerical, technical, academic, or Professional/Administrative positions holding ALA-accredited M.L.S. degrees, or the equivalent, from all campuses, including extra-systems libraries. Visiting and Part-time Librarians are not eligible, nor are active members of the White Award Committee. Librarians who receive the White Award may not apply again during the year following receipt of the Award. Preference will be given to those who have not previously received the Award.

Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following:

* Appropriateness of the project to the stated career goals of the applicant.

* Originality.

* Timeliness of the project on the applicant's career path.

* Cohesiveness of the various components of the proposed project.

* Clarity and strength of the narrative description.

Type of Award: Annual award of up to $2500. The award may be given to one person or divided by two. Proposals which request less than the total amount will be considered. If the award is not given one year, the funds may not be carried over to the next year.
