During the first quarter of 1996, the Serials Cataloging Unit completed numerous special projects in a continuing effort to support the current goals and priorities of the Indiana University Libraries. It is important to note that none of these projects could have been accomplished without the help and continued support of the Access Services Department. The teamwork displayed in our many joint projects has served as a model example of what can be accomplished through interdepartmental cooperation. Once again, our thanks to Vaughn Nuest, Keith Welch (Assistant Stacks Supervisor) and their outstanding crew for assisting in the completion of these projects.
Kudos to Christopher Walker (CONSER/NACO Cataloger) for his excellent work and successful completion of the Research Collection's 7th Floor Transfer/Withdrawal Project. This particular project required the retrospective conversion of some very difficult materials prior to their actual transfer. Bob Goehlert (Subject Specialist for Economics, Political Science & Criminal Justice) provided a list of 47 serial titles which resulted in the removal of 1,940 physical volumes to the Interim Storage Facility.
Special thanks to Lyle Neff (CONSER/NACO Cataloger) and Judie Foster (Serials Cataloger) for completing the cataloging and transfer of 50 serial titles (626 physical volumes) classed in "ML" from the Research Collection to the new Music Library facility. Of particular note was the fact that this entire project (involving multiple processing units, merging of existing MARC holdings, etc.) was accomplished within only a 3-day window.
Our thanks also to Tabib Ghaffari (Preservation Dept.), Jim Onken (Access Services Dept.), and their staff for helping in the processing and transferring of these volumes to the Music Library.
Under James Castrataro's outstanding leadership, all of the Biology Library's serial titles currently located in remote access shelving areas are now fully cataloged and reflected in IUCAT. Thanks to James, the completion of a such major project made an important contribution towards the Serials Cataloging Unit's ongoing retrospective conversion efforts.
Judie Foster (Serials Cataloger) is to be congratulated for her work in completing a special project involving the creation of linked item records and barcode assignment for thousands of Biology Library serial volumes housed in the Interim Storage Facility. Working from a list of 151 pages of serial titles, this project constituted part of a program developed with Access Services which allows for the management and retrieval of materials located inthe various remote/interim storage facilities. Because of Judie's work, staff in Access Services will now be able to barcode these items and record in IUCAT the specific location of each physical volume.
