The name was changed from College of Liberal Arts to College of Arts and Sciences in 1921. Selatie Edgar Stout and David Andrew Rothrock had been appointed as Deans (Stout with seniority) in 1920 and shared the office until 1937 when Rothrock was made Director of Admissions. Stout continued as Dean until his retirement at the end of the third semester 1942. He was followed by Fernandus Payne (1942-1947), John William Ashton (1947-1950), Frank Thomson Gucker (1951-1965), Joseph Lee Sutton (1965-1966), Byrum E. Carter (1966-1970), George W. Wilson (1971-1973), V. J. Shiner, Jr. (1974-1979, Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis (1979-1981), and Gary A. Sojka (1981-)....
Born in Philadelphia, Frank Thomson Gucker, Jr. (1900-1973) studied at Haverford College and Harvard. After completing his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Harvard in 1925, Gucker spent two years at the California Institute of Technology as a research fellow and worked for E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company before joining the faculty at Northwestern University in 1929. He came to Indiana University in 1947 as professor and chairman of the Department of Chemistry. He became dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1951, a position he held for fourteen years. His acceptance of the position was dependent on the University's agreement that he have an associate dean to assist him so that he have free time for research. During his tenure the College of Arts and Sciences tripled in size and many of his assistants went on to become administrators at Indiana and other colleges and Universities. They include George Waggoner, Sam Braden, L.L. Merritt, Joseph Sutton and John W. Snyder.
Gucker launched the College's study of foreign areas in 1956,
which led to the establishment of the Russian and East European
Institute. He was actively involved in the establishment of the
Wrubel Computing Center, the Radiochemistry building and the
appointment of a School Coordinator to form a liaison between the
College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and the
high schools of Indiana. He was instrumental in developing the
High School Junior Summer Language Institute, the High School
Summer Science Institute and the Indiana Language Program. In
1958 he helped establish the department of History and Philosophy
of Science.
Series 2, Financial Records (1949-1960), contains binders and folders of yearly budgets, proposed budgets and estimates.
Series 3, Faculty Records (1938-1967), is divided into two
subseries: 1) Individual Faculty Files, 1938-1967, arranged
alphabetically and 2) Tenure and Promotion Files, 1949-1963,
arranged chronologically. The individual faculty files consist
of inactive files for professors who died, retired, quit or were
visiting professors during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The
Tenure and Promotion Files cover tenure, promotions and
reappointments for faculty. Generally the material is grouped
according to academic year in its original order, however there
are three files for individuals. The bulk of the material is for
the years 1955-1963.
