Historical Note

Responsibilities as the assistant to the chancellor for University Relations for Indiana University Southeast developing and maintaining media relations in the region, preparing and disseminating new releases and feature stories, preparing brochures, assisting with the preparation for the annual bulletin, publishing newsletters, public-speaking, fundraising, and representing the University at meetings and events.

Responsibilities as the Director of Special Events include coordinating plans for all major ceremonies, programs, and visitations making arrangements for hosting distinguished visitors and serving as special events consultant to all IU campuses. In addition, served as general assistant to the vice president for university relations.

Charles M. Coffey succeeded Major-General Joseph O. Butcher in the post of Director of SpecialEvents.

Coffey first became affiliated with Indiana University in 1971 as a part-time telecommunications instructor. He served as Assistnat to the Chancellor for University Relations from 1972- 1977 at IUS and as Director of Special Events, where he served all IU campuses, from 1977-1982. Prior to his positions at IU, Coffey was a radio and television newsman with WHAS, Inc. in Louisville, KY.

Scope and Content Note

The records of Charles M. Coffey document his work in the office of University Relations, where he served as Assistant to the Chancellor For University Relations from 1972-1977 and Director of Special Events from 1977-1982.

The 46 files date from 1971-1982 and are arranged alphabetically. A large portion of this material relates to federal and state legislation for the University between 1971- l974. The I.U. Art Museum file contains plans for the 1982 dedication plus xerox copies of an application for an NEH grant with the signatures of House of Representatives Dan Quayle, John Meyers, Lee H. Hamilton, and Senator Birch Bayh. There are also records concerning cases of Legionnaire's Disease that were reported after a real estate conference at the Memorial Union.
