Historical Note

The Indiana University School of Medicine was established in 1903 in Bloomington. At that time it was only the 4th such school in the United States. However, the history of the State's medical education has several earlier beginnings which later became part of Indiana University's School of Medicine. The IU School of Medicine represents a union of numerous Indiana medical institutions - the Medical College of Indiana at Indianapolis (org. 1869), the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons of Indianapolis (org. 1879), the Ft. Wayne College of Medicine at Ft. Wayne, Indiana (org. 1879), the IU School of Medicine at Bloomington (org. 1903), and the State College of Physicians and Surgeons of Indianapolis (org. 1906). In 1905, the Medical College of Indiana, the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Ft. Wayne College of Medicine merged under the name of the Medical College of Indiana, the School of Medicine of Purdue University. In 1907, the Indiana University School of Medicine and the State College of Physicians and Surgeons merged under the name of the Indiana University School of Medicine, and in 1908, the Indiana Medical College was merged with the Indiana University School of Medicine.

A School of Medicine cannot exist without the proper facilities to train its students. Some of the major School of Medicine construction projects have included the following: the Medical College Building in 1908; the Robert W. Long Hospital in 1911; the School of Medicine Building (Emerson Hall) in 1919; the James W. Riley Children's Hospital in 1924, with a major addition in 1969; the William H. Coleman Hospital for Women in 1927; the Clinical Building in 1937; Fesler Hall in 1950; the Medical Science Building in 1960; and the University Hospital in 1974 - all of which are located on the present campus of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

Scope and Content Note

The Deans of the Indiana University School of Medicine include the following individuals: Henry Jameson was interim Dean from 1903 to 1908; the first Dean was Allison Maxwell from 1908 to 1911; the second Dean was Charles P. Emerson from 1911 to 1931; the third Dean was Willis D. Gatch from 1931 to 1946; the fourth and first full-time Dean was John D. Van Nuys from 1946 to 1964; the fifth Dean was Glenn W. Irwin, Jr. from 1964 to 1973; the sixth Dean was Steven C. Beering (presently President of Purdue University) who took office in 1973. Burton D. Myers was Assistant Dean and Dean at Bloomington from 1920 to 1927 and from 1927 to 1940 respectively. Bulk dates for the Dean's Office / Office of the Dean records range from 1903-1925 to 1938- 1942 to 1947-1949.
