After the death of James Whitcomb Riley in 1916, a group of his friends - including George Ade, Booth Tarkington, and Meredith Nicholson - organized the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association. In order to provide a lasting tribute to their friend, "the children's poet," the early leaders of the association decided to erect a hospital for children in Riley's name. To assure medical service of the highest order, and also, to insure the absolute permanence of the memorial, the founders chose to entrust management of the hospital to the Indiana University School of Medicine. Thus, at the request of the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association and of the University, the Indiana General Assembly in 1921 authorized the establishment of the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. At the same time it was accepted by the Trustees of Indiana University as a gift from the association and its donors. The James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association accepted the responsibility of providing, by public subscription, the funds to purchase ground and build the hospital adjacent to the teaching center.
The James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association bequests and gifts - in whole or in part - some forty separate projects for the benefit of sick and crippled children. The association supports a multi-phase program centered in six major areas:
*Extensive research into the diseases and disabilities of children.
*Direct patient care.
*Expansion, alteration, and modernization of the physical plant of the hospital.
*Procurement of the most modern medical and surgical equipment.
*Professional education of doctors, nurses, and techicians.
*Summer camping for crippled children.
