Description

A hundred-and-fourteen years of Hoagy! A celebration for the birthday of Bloomington’s favorite son.

Please join us on Friday, February 7th as the Archives of Traditional Music hosts its annual commemoration of Hoagy Carmichael’s life and legacy. The Rachel Caswell-Dave Stryker Duo, the Lara Lynn Trio (feat. Kid Kazooey), and The Double Digits will pay homage to Hoagy’s creative genius by interpreting a fine selection from the Carmichael songbook. Celebrate with us the life and art of Bloomington’s favorite son!

Hoagy Carmichael was a Bloomington-born and raised pianist and songwriter, whose musical talent was recognized with awards such as the Grammy, the Grammy Hall of Fame, and the Oscar for best song in a motion picture. Active as a musician, film and television actor, radio personality, and all-around celebrity, Hoagy is most famous for having written the music to four of the most recorded American songs of all time: “Stardust,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “Heart and Soul,” and “The Nearness of You.”

The Hoagy Carmichael Room, which functions as the Archives of Traditional Music’s event room, is a special facility which displays a portion of the Hoagy Carmichael collection, donated by the Carmichael family. The collection includes Hoagy’s piano, a desk where he wrote numerous compositions, a jukebox with his music on 78s, awards, photos, memorabilia, and original manuscripts from some of his most renowned musical works.
