Description

The Quest For The First Rock 'n' Roll Record, 1945-1954, With Music And Stories By The 123s & Friends

Local band, The 123s will take over the Hoagy Carmichael room and summon the grandfather spirits of rock ’n’ roll. Dressed in period attire, and enacting a performance whose energy will make you move out of your seat, The 123s will give their insight of the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Self-defined as a “piano-buckets rock ’n’ roll brigade,” the 123s are known for their energetic dancing, open-band policy, and clog-dancing hot dog.

Under the direction of Ross Martinie Eiler, The 123s will engage with the search of that imagined first rock ’n’ roll record, a question that leads to a further question: what is rock ‘n’ roll. Using this lens, they will explore issues of class, race, recording technology, and popular culture in mid-twentieth century USA. Through performance and storytelling, The 123s will present early rock ’n’ roll gems, such as Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston and Rock A While by Goree Carter, among many others.

A joint venture between popular music history and some serious rock and rolling, The 123s will revive the glorious decade of 1945-1954 at the Hoagy Carmichael Room (and using Hoagy’s piano!).
