Music of the Carpathian Mountains with Shaun Williams and friends
Please join us on Friday, April 11th as the Archives of Traditional Music presents a performance/lecture on musical traditions of the Carpathian Mountains with researcher and multi-instrumentalist Shaun Williams, violinists Tiffany Shoneboom and Dena El Saffar, bassist Robert Widlowski, and violist Thomas McShane.
The Carpathian Mountains span six Central and Eastern European countries and are home to a multitude of ethnic groups and highland cultures. This performance/lecture will introduce listeners to Ruthenian, Hutsul, Bukovinian, Romani and Hasidic genres of traditional music indigenous to the Eastern Carpathian region of Ukraine and Romania. Shaun Williams, a graduate student in Ethnomusicology at Indiana University, will present audiovisual fieldwork materials in order to provide a glimpse of musical life in the region, followed by a live musical demonstration featuring instruments such as the tsymbaly (hammered dulcimer), cobza (lute), kontra (3-string viola), and tylynka (overtone flute).
The Hoagy Carmichael Room is located in Morrison Hall, Room 006 on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, IN.
