OCLC Access for IU Libraries
OCLC FirstSearch: WorldCat Database
To search the OCLC database for holdings worldwide see WorldCat. Also WorldCat is available from the Libraries Find Information page in the "Top 10 Resources" section.
OCLC and the IU Libraries
- Q. What is OCLC?
- A. OCLC is an external data provider with whom IU has a contract to provide cataloging and other library data.
- Q. How do Libraries Staff get access to OCLC data?
- A. The Libraries use a proprietary software package provided by OCLC which is called "Connexion".
- Q. What does Connexion do?
- A. Connexion accesses OCLC servers to query and retrieve database records. IU Libraries Staff import these records to the IU library management system, customize and enhance the information in the records, and provide access to them in IUCAT.
For Libraries Staff
As of August 1, 2005, the dedicated connection to OCLC (the gateway located at the IUPUI campus) was retired by OCLC. This retirement necessitates two changes.
- You can no longer use "dedip" or TLP. To change the access setting in the Connexion client: select Tools, from the menu choose Options, then go to the Access tab. In the Internet Access section, select "OCLC Default". This is user-specific, so each user has to do this, including every student employee.
- LIT no longer needs to trouble-shoot OCLC access problems because access to OCLC is direct.
