"Unable to find application"
Sometimes, when you click on the "Telnet to Infogate" link, a window
would pop up: "Unable to find application" or some similar error
messages.
The error message you saw indicates that your browser, netscape in
most cases, does not know where to find the telnet program. Netscape
requires a telnet program to connect to IUCAT, or other remote telnet
sites.
To configure netscape for telnet connection, select Options from the top
menu. Under Options, select General Preferences. While there, select
Applications or Apps. The first window under there is Telnet. To its
right, there is the Browse button. Click on it and you will see the
directory listing of your hard drive. Look around until you find the
telnet program. Then click OK and close the Options window. From that
point on, your netscape will launch this telnet program whenever it tries
to connect a site with the url: telnet://some.site.
This instruction may not work in your situation for two reasons: 1) your
netscape may not show the exact sequence, or 2) your telnet program
requires special parameters. If the instruction does not work for you,
please give us more information about your local system, including what
operating system you are running, what version of netscape (or other web
browser) you are using, and what telnet program you have, so that we can
help you further, or you can ask your local computer person to help you
configure it. The basic idea is to configure netscape to launch telnet.
If this doesn't work for you, you can always telnet directly to IUCAT
without using netscape or any other web browser. The telnet address
for IUCAT is: infogate.ucs.indiana.edu (if you are on campus, or
dial in via ppp, the address can be shortened to infogate).
There is a new wrinkle to the story with the coming of Netscape
Communicator and Navigator version 4. In this version, the applications
or apps option, is no longer there. The whole Option menu is moved
to another location. It is now under Edit. So the procedure is:
Edit --> Preferences --> Applications. Scroll down the window on
the right side until you see Netscape/Telnet. Highlight that option,
and click on the Edit button on the upper right corner of the screen.
You'll need to locate your telnet program the same way.
