INDIANA UNIVERSITY FINE ARTS LIBRARY GUIDE
Welcome to the I.U. Fine Arts Library! This guide will provide you with basic information for doing research on French Impressionism both here and at your school or local public library. Please feel free to ask for assistance from our reference staff. You may also contact us at 812-855-4597 or by email at libart@indiana.edu.
GUIDELINES FOR USING THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY FINE ARTS LIBRARY
- You may check out books only if you have an I.U. ID (student, faculty or staff) or an I.U. Libraries Borrower’s Card. Borrower’s cards can be issued to anyone with an Indiana driver’s license at the circulation desk of the Fine Arts Library or any other library on the Bloomington campus. The circulation period for Indiana residents is 14 days.
- Remember--you will be charged an overdue fine of $.25 a day for late books!
- The Reading Room and the stacks (the area upstairs where the books are shelved) are quiet areas. Please do not speak above a whisper when you are in these areas of the library.
- Ask at the circulation desk for any type of assistance. We want to help with your research!

IUCAT (the online catalog) AND THE CARD CATALOG
IUCAT and the card catalog are the primary indexes to the Fine Arts Library's collections. The IUCAT database does not include all the books that were part of the Library's holdings before 1976; therefore, you should always check both IUCAT and the card catalog before assuming that we do not have a book. The following headings may be used in the card catalog and in IUCAT for subject searches:
IMPRESSIONISM
IMPRESSIONISM--FRANCE
IMPRESSIONISM ART
IMPRESSIONISM ART--FRANCE
IMPRESSIONIST ARTISTS
PAINTING MODERN--FRANCE
You can also do a subject search on a specific artist. Names are cataloged last name first. Example: Monet, Claude
Keyword searches are often useful, too--particularly when you are using online periodical indexes, databases or World Wide Web search engines/directories. Some good keyword searches on this topic are:
IMPRESSIONISM AND FRANCE
IMPRESSIONISM AND FRENCH
CLAUDE MONET
RENOIR AND IMPRESSIONISM (you can substitute the last name of any artist)
BROWSING LIBRARY SHELVES FOR INFORMATION ON FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM
Most of the libraries at I.U., including ours, use the Library of Congress call number system. Your school and public libraries probably have Dewey Decimal call numbers. Here are some call numbers from both systems that will help you browse the shelves for books on French Impressionism and Impressionist artists.
Library of Congress system:
- ND540’s for the history of French painting; books specifically on the 19th century start with ND547
- ND553’s are books about specific French artists arranged alphabetically. Examples:
- Cézanne is ND553 .C3
- Degas is ND553 .D3
- Monet is ND553 .M7
- Morisot is ND553 .M8
Dewey Decimal system:
- 759.4 is Impressionism section of art history
- 759.13 contains works about specific painters; the number is followed by the first three letters of the painter’s last name (for example, Monet is 759.13 Mon)
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Be very careful when you are using resources from the Internet in a homework assignment. If you have any doubts about the credibility of a Web site or electronic materials, ask your teacher or a librarian. The links listed below are all good sources of information about the French Impressionism movement in the visual arts or specific Impressionist artists. Have fun!
- The Artchive
A good cite for a wide variety of art history-related information. You can find information on both the movment in general and on specific artists.
- Impressionism, World Wide Arts Resources
This page has links to information about specific artists identified with the Impressionism movement.
- The Web Museum: Impressionism
Highly Recommended!
This cite offers a general analysis of Impressionism but is most valuable for its in-depth look at the major contributors to the movement.
- Study Web: Fine Arts: Impressionism/Post-Impressionism
Study Web is a collection of links selected to help with homework projects. Each listed Web site is rated and annotated -- some were created by students as class projects. You can find the material on Impressionism by clicking on "Fine Arts" from the home page and then clicking on "Impressionism & Post-Impressionism" under "Art & Art History."
