How do
Boolean Operators Work?
Using ( )
Parentheses ( ) are used to
separate one part of a search from another. In the searches below, using
the OR Boolean operator, the terms that were combined with OR were
separated from the rest of the search with parentheses ( ).
The computer will search for terms in
parentheses before the other terms are searched. Watch how the
parentheses are used in searches on the following pages.
Sample Searches:
Coal near (Indiana OR Illinois)
(Devonian OR Mississippian) near Indiana Indiana near (Fossils or
Paleontology)
Try a search using ( )
in GeoRef.
